It's a horrific story. And it has both Jim Gearhart and Bob Williams aghast.

Two people -- a fifth-grader and a teacher -- are dead after a Paramus school bus was struck by a dump truck on Route 80 in Mount Olive. DOT officials who've seen video footage say the bus quickly crossed three lanes, apparently to make an illegal U-turn.

Jim and Bob recount what we know so far.

There's a school of thought that the Earth, Gaia is an organism unto itself -- with its own goals, its own personality and its own lifeforce. And if so, it seems to be actively treating us as a malignant infection, Jim says.

Former American Federation of Teachers president Al Shanker once infamously said: "When school children start paying union dues, that's when I'll start representing the interests of school children." 

It sure seems to Jim Gearhart teachers are looking out for themselves more than children -- and perhaps that's why, Jim says, as the world's become more complex and more intricate, young people are graduating from our schools less equiped to face it.

Jim Gearhart agrees -- access to weapons is a problem. Not everyone needs an assault rifle, he says. But let's not pretend other guns can't do damage, too.

In any case, Jim says -- it's not our core problem, or our only one. The biggies? Our "culture of violence ... and the ease of getting the materials to carry out violence."

More than what a gunman might do, Jim's worried any nut with an Internet connection can find bomb-making instructions online and get the materials without much hassle. And that keeps him up at night.

Jim control isn't a gun enthusiast. He hasn't hunted in ages, and he gave away his last gun years ago. He doesn't think everyone needs an assault weapon. But he's convinced -- gun control alone won't nearly stop our gun violence problem.

Maybe, he says, if culture was less enamored with violent death, we might get somewhere.
