New Jersey's got so many corrupt politicians, there's even a wikipedia page rounding them up! In the latest edition of the Jim Gearhart podcast, he's proud to welcome former Paterson Mayor Jose "Joey" Torres, who has bee sentenced him to five years in prison on corruption charges, into the New Jersey Corrupt Politicians Hall of Fame!

It's an understatement to say Jim's not impressed with today's popular music. He remembers the days of Ray Charles — a man whose hearing was so acute, Jim was told upon meeting the legend, he could fly the plane he'd come in on despite being blind. 

And he can't imagine his music heroes inspiring the sort of violence we saw earlier this month in Howell.

If you've been following the Jim Gearhart podcast, you know there's no love lost between the longtime New Jersey 101.5 broadcaster and one of his former peers on the WKXW lineup, Craig Carton.

But this week, Jim says, thinking about Carton's alleged predicament — owing millions of dollars it would take about 22 years to pay off even if he didn't touch a dime of his salary for any other purpose — he's got a "flash of sympathy" for the indicted former radio host.

Jim Gearhart, like a lot of us, has been having trouble wrapping his head around the Oct. 1 mass shooting in Las Vegas — the largest the U.S. has ever seen.

Jim thought Democratic Sen. Diane Feinstein was being entirely reasonable when she said no gun law would have stopped that shooter. But he's also been thinking about the reasons people are so protective of their gun rights.

And here's what it comes down to: People don't trust the government. They don't trust it to protect them from invaders. They don't trust it not to fall to an insurrection from within. They don't trust it to keep them safe in race riots, or in an economic collapse. They want to keep their families safe, and they want guns to protect them.

And any of that could happen, Jim says in latest installment of the Jim Gearhart Show podcast.

These guys on the football field aren't there to do battle on behalf of their country. They're not there to do us proud as Americans.

"I can't see the Green Bay Packer offensive line raising the flag on Iwo Jima," Jim Gearhart.

And if war did break out? "My guess is that should a war break out, many of them, en masse, would transfer to the Canadian Football League," Jim says.

Perhaps you’ve heard about the conflict between members of the north Jersey Orthodox Jewish community and the municipal leadership Mahwah. They’re fighting over string.

Orthodox Jews can’t carry goods outside their home on the Sabbath. “God had ordained that, we are told scripturally,” Jim Gearhart says in latest installment of the Jim Gearhart Show podcast, available here as well on iTunes and Google Play.

“But man says, ‘Well, nobody wants to sit and twiddle their thumbs and stair at the wall all day long. I have a cunning plan.'”

That plan? An eruv — a symbolic border around an area of town that lets the Orthodox treat it as a private space, and carry those items that normally would have to be left behind. The Eruvim have prompted legal battles and been the subject of antisemitic vandalism.

It sounds a little fishy to Jim. But maybe God doesn’t mind the loophole.

“Besides, he’s getting old,” Jim says. “God is as old … as god.”

Perhaps, Jim Gearhart says, he could have been more charitable when he called former New Jersey 101.5 host Craig Carton "a cancer" on the station.

Maybe he's more like Frankenstein's monster — he hurts people because he's incapable of love.
