Board members, committee chairs, and volunteer leaders are all important pieces to helping make your organization run smoothly. In this episode, I’m chatting with Denise Cagan, president of DCA Virtual Business Support. Her company has been providing behind-the-scenes administrative support for many years.
If you’ve been wanting to implement or increase the support and education you offer your membership leaders, then this episode will hopefully give you some things to consider!

ABOUT YOUR HOST
Yes, there is a “real” Joy in The Joy of Membership.
Founder & CEO Joy Duling has been working with leaders of associations, trade groups and nonprofits since 2005.
She has also walked the same journey, serving for nearly 10 years as the Executive Director of a membership-based nonprofit which she helped launch from scratch and led to annual revenues of more than $1M exclusively from membership contributions.
Joy has been widely recognized as a speaker, an online educator and a trusted advisor, twice winning the “Unsung Hero Award” from the National Association of Women Business Owners' Central Illinois Chapter. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Social Work with Specialization in Policy, Planning and Administration. She has extensive experience in strategic planning, team facilitation, change management, and association operations.
But beyond industry experience and education…
Joy Duling is the calm voice you want to have in the room when you, your team, or your board is overwhelmed by ideas and options.
She's a trusted resource at the other end of an email or phone call who knows the answer, or can find the answer, when it's not clear what to do next in your approach.
She's a planner of systems and driver of progress that helps your organization achieve stretch goals.
She's a gifted facilitator of conversation, collaboration, and constructive growth.
And she's approachable and results-oriented, which makes it easy to shake loose of the old and start fresh on the new.
In this week’s episode, I’d like to introduce you to my friend, Jerry Gitchel. Jerry is the founder of Leverage Unlimited, Inc. Long before the pandemic forced all of us to starting thinking about virtual events, Jerry was producing such events and making technology work for a range of clients from fortune 500 companies to small business organizations to Solopreneurs.
I had the opportunity recently to be included as a speaker at one of Jerry’s hybrid events and I can definitely say that it felt completely different from others that I’ve experienced. This podcast conversation with Jerry is actually just one-part of what we’ll be covering this week. On Thursday of this week, Jerry will be joining me for my weekly LIVE training where I’ll be sharing how JourneyCARE can be leveraged to create intentional CAREpoints for your in-person, virtual, and hybrid events. When you’re able to do that, you elevate the attendee’s experience from one that feels merely like a transactional registration to an experience that feels like you actually care about the attendee’s needs before, during, and after the event… that’s something that Jerry models in everything that he does.

With online meetings and conferences quickly becoming the norm throughout 2020 and beyond, many organizations were faced with the challenge of how to transition their meaningful in-person events to virtual...without losing the meaningful connections and resources their members were used to receiving. Now that some in-person events are starting up again, I'm reminded how important the networking aspect is, particularly after an event's conclusion.
This week's podcast episode revisits a pre-pandemic interview I had with Robbie Samuels, a self-declared "multi-hyphenate" who wears many hats. In this interview, we talked about his experience and expertise in the networking sphere when it comes to events and conferences. This is such valuable insight as we begin dipping our toes in the world of in-person networking once again, and I hope you find this week's episode both engaging and informative!

I am so excited to introduce you to Leona Dalavai Scott. She is a content creator, founder and president of JEP Marketing Communications in North Texas. Having worked for professional and trade associations for most of her professional career, she is committed to using content as a way to build membership value to attract, convert and retain members and customers. She recently published The C.O.N.T.E.N.T. Solution, a step-by-step workbook on how to use content to drive membership through goal setting and planning. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters in Texas. Her favorite hobbies include cooking Indian food (yum!), cruising the bike trails in her neighborhood, and reading. The thing that I absolutely love about Leona is that in our talk, it wasn't just about content being important, but actually how to make it easy to do, and that's really important for organizations that are juggling a lot of balls and needing to find ways to do things that don't take a lot of time, energy, and staff resources. In fact, download Leona's free five-sequence "plug and play" templates to help you convert more prospects into new members here: https://bit.ly/conversioncontent. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Leona!

You might want to don your finest wide-brimmed, Southern belle hat for this week’s episode. That’s because my guest this week is joining us from the Kentucky Derby Museum. Yep, the museum that focuses on one of the most legendary race tracks in the world. Rachel Collier Carr is Director of Communications for the museum, serving as their primary media spokesperson, coordinating press conferences, media requests, public relations, and all the content from social media to newsletters. One of the funding streams for the museum is its membership, something that the museum’s team has spent lots of time thinking about lately. Rachel joins us to talk about that, along with all the exciting things that happen at what sounds like a very fun but also very busy place to work!
