​During Karen Read's first trial in 2024, the jury deliberated for approximately 23 hours over several days but reported being "deeply divided" and unable to reach a unanimous verdict. Subsequent statements from jurors indicated they had unanimously agreed on not guilty verdicts for the charges of second-degree murder and leaving the scene of a fatal accident but were deadlocked on the charge of manslaughter. Due to this impasse, the judge declared a mistrial on July 1, 2024.

​In July 2024, the trial of Karen Read, accused of the second-degree murder of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, concluded with a mistrial after the jury reported being "hopelessly deadlocked" following several days of deliberations. The jury informed Judge Beverly Cannone that they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict, leading to the declaration of a mistrial. Subsequently, Read's defense team sought to dismiss the charges, citing double jeopardy concerns and claiming that jurors had agreed on not guilty verdicts for certain charges during deliberations. However, these motions were denied, and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that Read could be retried on all charges.
