Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary

Kouri Richins made a new move in her fight for another trial, and prosecutors questioned the reason she gave. Her attorneys submitted a sealed request to pause the case while investigators examined possible interference surrounding the original murder prosecution. That separate investigation has led to charges against Wasatch County Sheriff Jared Rigby and former Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds. Both deny wrongdoing and have pleaded not guilty. 

In March, jurors convicted Richins of aggravated murder, attempted murder, insurance fraud and forgery. Eric Richins died in March 2022 after drinking a fentanyl-laced cocktail. A judge sentenced Kouri to life without parole on what would have been Eric’s 44th birthday. 

The defense sought a new trial, arguing among other things that Judge Richard Mrazik had shown bias. Another judge refused to disqualify him. Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth later argued the sealed request raised a different complaint about a closed pretrial hearing rather than the conduct before jurors that the defense had initially attacked. He called the request’s stated basis a misleading pretext. 

The obstruction investigation involves allegations circulated about Detective Eric Mainord, who helped investigate Eric’s death. An anonymous letter reached prosecutors before trial. Reporting on search warrant materials describes concerns that the allegations were deployed in a sheriff’s election dispute and could interfere with the Richins case. Rigby and Edmunds now face felony obstruction charges, but the full allegations in their indictments have not been made public. 

The request for a pause did not remain active. The court rejected a stay, and the defense withdrew its request. Gypsy Rose Blanchard told PEOPLE she believed Ken Urker died from an overdose. The official cause had not been released. That distinction matters when the father of her young daughter is found dead and online speculation begins naming people before police do. 

Ken was found in his Raceland, Louisiana home on October 1, 2026, the day he turned 34. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office reported no evidence of foul play to that point, but said its investigation was still open. Investigators had not publicly alleged that Gypsy caused his death. 

Ken’s sister Autumn has disputed Gypsy’s statements about the period before he died. She also says he kept a gun nearby at night because he had received threats from strangers. Gypsy has described online harassment as a serious problem for Ken and has promoted a petition she calls Kenan’s Law. Their disagreement is public. Their shared concern about threats is worth separating from the unproven claims being circulated about the death. 

One rumor claimed Ken was preparing a full-custody fight over Aurora. That assertion has not been established by the material available here. Gypsy has shared text messages she describes as evidence of an amicable parenting discussion. Neither a rumor nor a selected exchange of messages can substitute for an investigative finding.

Sandra Birchmore told friends that Matthew Farwell had made a complete 180, according to federal prosecutors. A friend had disclosed their relationship to the Stoughton Police Department. Prosecutors say Farwell went from anger to renewed kindness during the days before Sandra died. 

Assistant U.S. Attorney Torey Cummings told the jury that Farwell met Sandra through a police youth program when she was a child. Prosecutors allege the former detective maintained a relationship with her beginning when she was underage. By February 2021, Sandra was 23, pregnant, and preparing to become a mother. Farwell’s lawyers maintain she took her own life. 

Prosecutors allege that Farwell asked for access to her apartment and entered her building in a hood and medical mask on February 1. They contend he killed Sandra and arranged the scene to suggest suicide. Farwell has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges tied to her death and the death of her unborn child. 

With retired FBI behavioral expert Robin Dreeke, we examine how investigators distinguish a suspicious pattern from a story constructed after the fact. The reported change in Farwell’s manner is one element. The accounts Sandra shared with friends, the building footage, and the physical evidence must all be weighed on their own terms. 

There is also the original response. Federal prosecutors have criticized the early state investigation. The medical examiner changed the manner of death from suicide to undetermined in April 2026. The family’s pathologist, Dr. Michael Baden, separately reached a homicide conclusion. Those findings put the original ruling and the defense position under sustained scrutiny as the federal trial proceeds.

Caleb Flynn received life without parole following nine guilty verdicts. Patrick Mulligan filed his notice of appeal and requested appointed counsel, opening another legal fight over the verdict in Ashley Flynn’s death.

Mulligan has questioned whether prosecutors proved prior calculation and design. The defense also raised concerns about the jury instructions and venue. Those arguments will have to meet the demanding standards of appellate review, where the focus is on claimed legal errors rather than retrying every witness.

Tony Brueski and former FBI behavioral expert Robin Dreeke connect that challenge to the trial testimony of Alleigha Botner. The jury heard about approximately 107,000 messages between Botner and Flynn, including Botner’s own statement that she wanted Ashley dead. Botner testified about deleting texts and about initially denying her relationship with Flynn when federal agents questioned her.

Defense questioning also highlighted searches investigators did not conduct. Surveillance at the Vandalia house-sitting location documented a vehicle, not a clear identification of the person driving it. That gap may fuel debate about investigative completeness, but it does not by itself overturn a conviction or implicate Botner in the crime.

Flynn maintains his innocence. Botner has not been charged. Robin and Tony examine what those unresolved questions can and cannot mean as the appeal moves forward.

Christa Pike’s legal team warned a court about IV access before Tennessee tried to execute her on September 30, 2026. She survived two doses of pentobarbital, and her attorneys now say the very complications they feared caused injuries during the procedure. 

The pre-execution lawsuit identified thrombocytosis, a blood condition, and small veins. Lawyers sought different equipment and experienced personnel to place an IV line. Tennessee argued that previous blood draws showed accessible veins and disputed the claim that Pike faced a serious risk. A special master heard the competing evidence in August. 

That dispute did not end with the execution attempt. Pike’s lawyers contend the IV lines malfunctioned and medication entered the tissue around them. State corrections officials insist they followed their lawful protocol. Their public statement also acknowledged that the manual provided no additional procedure after the second dose. 

A Davidson County judge has ordered the state to keep the equipment, drug records, execution logs and communications that could help establish what happened. A separate review was announced, and Governor Bill Lee halted additional executions while the failure is examined. 

Pike recovered enough to leave the hospital and return to prison. Newly released emergency calls have added another question: why did responders wait while officials tried to confirm that the prison’s call for help was genuine? “I want everybody to be proud of me, but people get hurt there.” Christa Pike said that to her aunt at Christmas 1994, nineteen days before she and Tadaryl Shipp killed Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville. The complete three-part Hidden Killers documentary Satan's Helper: The Christa Pike Story, in one cut, starts with that sentence and ends thirty-one years later in a witness room at Riverbend.

In between is the record. Her mother testified her daughter had been out of control since she was eight and that she'd smoked marijuana with her to establish a friendship. Her father signed papers so someone else could adopt her. A staffer at the Swannanoa training school found her on a hobby-room floor with other girls, chanting over a five-pointed star drawn inside a circle. By an officer's account, she wore the same star on a chain when she walked up to the crime-scene tape the next day and giggled. Her confession ran forty-six typed pages. She told police Colleen begged to be let go and promised to walk home to Florida, and that it was harder to hurt somebody when they were talking to you. The medical examiner ran out of alphabet lettering the wounds.

After the death sentence she wrote Shipp that she'd bashed Colleen's brains out so she'd die quickly and signed it Little devil. In 2001 she choked an inmate with a boot lace until the woman was unconscious, then told her mother on a recorded line that she'd premeditated the hell out of it. In 2012 she was at the center of a plot to copy a prison key. In 2026 she survived her own execution. Tony tells it all and gives the last word to Colleen's mother, who says she is still waiting for a piece of her daughter.

Nine years since the Delphi murders. One conviction. And every failure in between.

In February 2017, Abby Williams, thirteen, and Libby German, fourteen, were found dead on a creek bank in Delphi, Indiana. Nine years later, Richard Allen sits in a prison cell in Oklahoma serving a hundred and thirty years. Everyone the defense says the evidence pointed to walks free. The system that convicted Allen is the same system that lost his tip in a drawer, erased its own interviews, and sat on a catfish account for four years.

This is the complete four-part docu-series examining the Delphi case — the investigation, the evidence, the trial, and the appeal.

It covers the tip marked "Cleared" by someone nobody has ever identified — a form that sat in a desk for five years while the investigation processed more than forty-two thousand other leads. The FBI warrant on the property owner that was sealed and shelved. The composite sketch that ran on every billboard for two years before police said it was the wrong person.

It covers Kegan Kline's catfish account — the one that communicated with Libby German and was allegedly used to arrange a meeting on the day she was killed. And the hundred-and-thirty-six-page defense filing naming men with alleged confessions, crime scene connections, and dried blood — all excluded from trial.

It covers thirteen months of solitary confinement that left Allen in documented psychosis, the more than sixty confessions he made during his mental collapse, and the state's decision to play the ones that helped its case and leave out the rest.

And it follows the case to the appellate courtroom where a judge told the prosecution five words: "You protected him into psychosis."

The appeal is pending. Three judges are reading the briefs.

Twenty-five minutes. That’s how long Sandra Birchmore spent on the phone with her best friend the evening of February 1, 2021. Lesley Davis testified the conversation was normal. Sandra never mentioned wanting to end her life.

Davis told the jury she went to police after Sandra’s death and named Matthew Farwell to two officers. Neither man documented what she said. On Day 5 of Farwell’s federal murder trial, the jury also learned that Farwell and Sgt. Robert Kuhn attended a 2019 police training conference in Wellesley where a state medical examiner’s office presentation covered suicidal hangings. Kuhn identified Farwell on surveillance video entering Sandra’s building that night — in a mask Kuhn called “very odd.”

Chief Donna McNamara, on administrative leave, testified she didn’t learn about a January 2021 call reporting Sandra and Farwell’s involvement until an FBI agent told her in 2024 — three years after Sandra was dead.
