The medical model of mental health has been the accepted form of care for years. It usually involves seeking mental health care when in a crisis and then stopping treatment once the crisis is over. However, in recent years, views on mental health have changed and become more about overall wellness.
In this week’s episode, I share a more detailed view of the medical model, including its pros and cons. I discuss what the wellness model of mental health looks like and why that is my preferred method as a therapist.

Grad school taught you theory. This podcast teaches you the rest.
Welcome to The Keys to Therapy: The podcast for therapists who want practical clinical skills, honest mentorship,…
I’m Samantha Newton, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, therapist, educator, and mentor, and I created this space for therapists who feel overwhelmed, underprepared, stuck in imposter syndrome, or unsure how to bridge the gap between graduate school and real-life clinical work.
If you’ve ever thought: “Why didn’t anyone teach us this in grad school?”
You’re in the right place.
Each episode combines practical teaching, candid conversations, and therapist mentorship to help you build confidence in the therapy room and beyond. From session structure, documentation, and clinical skills to burnout prevention, boundaries, career growth, and the realities of working in the mental health field — we cover the things many therapists wish they had learned sooner.
Whether you’re a student, new therapist, associate, newly licensed clinician, or someone still trying to feel more confident and grounded in your work, you’re in the right place. Because confidence doesn’t come from a text book-it comes from practical knowledge, experience, and skills.
Let’s build together.
