  • [041] Stand Out With Strong Relationships in Business!

Most people at one stage or another in their career want to know how to build strong relationships in business. How do you get people to know you, like you and trust you in business?

You may have been overlooked for promotions. Or perhaps you’ve seen high-level projects being awarded to people who are less skilled than you. In both these cases, I guarantee that the person who won the promotion or high-level project did so because of relationships they’ve built in their company or industry.

For your career progression and leadership success, it’s critical that you learn how relationships work and how to build them. As they say, when you realise you need a business relationship with somebody, it’s too late to start forming it.

Whether you’re an employee or an entrepreneur, strong relationships are the competitive edge you need to succeed.

In this episode of The Leadership Pod, you will learn the importance of building strong relationships in business so you can stand out!

    You will learn:

    • About the role people skills play in hiring managers choosing between job applicants.
    • What a profile of somebody with good relationship building skills looks like.
    • Why getting more education isn’t always the answer to advancing in your career.
    • How you can build your social skills, people skills and relationship building skill.

How to maintain a professional image when you work from home. This is a question many emerging leaders are asking themselves in 2020.

When you work from home, it’s tempting to opt for comfortable clothing such as activewear, loungewear or pyjamas. However, these outfit choices can have an impact on your level of productivity and confidence when you work from home.

Personally, I’ve found when I lift my level of formality in my WFH outfits, I immediately feel more confident and I’m more productive in my work.

In this episode of The Leadership Pod, I talk more about this issue and I share with you some ideas on what you can wear when you work from home.

    You will learn:

    • More about the CouponFollow study of remote workers.
    • How outfits choices impact your level of productivity.

  • [37] How to Disagree Assertively With Someone at Work

Learning how to disagree assertively with someone at work is a key skill that emerging leaders need to master. As you climb higher in the corporate world, you need to make your opinion known. You need to look like an independent thinker if you want to establish the reputation as a leader. And disagreeing with people at work when you need to or want to is a great way to do this.

However, disagreeing doesn’t come naturally to many people. If you’re more of a passive communicator, you’re likely to use a lot of indirect language when you disagree, causing your disagreement to sound weak. If you’re more of an aggressive communicator, your disagreements can sound too direct and overpowering.

There is a middle ground that is disagreeing assertively. This allows you to get your point across with confidence and conviction, while at the same time, maintaining a positive working relationship with the other person.

In this episode, How to Disagree Assertively With Someone at Work, I guide you through the 5-step strategy that will help you disagree assertively. I teach you the foundational concepts behind this strategy and give you example sentences to use in your next disagreement.

    You will learn:

    • Two common problems when people disagree.
    • 5-step structure on how to disagree assertively, respectively and effectively with someone at work.
    • 1. Recognise the other persons’ viewpoint.
    • 2. Ask permission to disagree.
    • 3. Verbalise your disagreement.
    • 4. Support your opinion with a rationale.
    • 5. Circle back and ask for input/feedback.

  • [036] Why Disagreeing Makes You Look Like a Leader

What are the benefits of disagreeing? Why do you need to disagree as a leader? Many people avoid disagreeing. It can be daunting, especially if you’re disagreeing with somebody more powerful than you. However, in leadership, it’s critical that you develop the skill to disagree when you need to and want to.

Holding back from disagreeing can lead to many negative repercussions in leadership. The main one being, you can let bad ideas stay in the conversation, driving your team’s growth in the wrong direction, which in turn, damages your reputation as a leader.

In this episode, I share my thoughts on why it can be hard to disagree and then I continue on with three reasons as to why you should disagree when you’re a leader.

In “Why Disagreeing Makes You Look Like a Leader”, you will learn:

    • Why disagreeing with family and friends is easier than with your coworkers.
    • Fears that could be holding you back from disagreeing.
    • Why you can’t be a people-pleaser and agree 100% of the time.
    • Why disagreeing makes you look like a leader.
    • How disagreeing makes you look more honest and authentic.
    • Why disagreeing helps you become more visible in the office.
    • Details about next week’s episode on how to disagree.

  • [035] How to Be More Visible at Work (Without Being Self-Promotional)

How to become more visible at work is a question many emerging leaders ask. As you progress in your career and step up to leadership positions, it’s critical that you become more visible in the workplace.

However many emerging leaders are apprehensive about doing this because they don’t want to be self-promotional. Becoming visible in the workplace does not mean you have to be self-promotional. The best way of promoting yourself in the workplace is to focus on your accomplishments and the value you bring.

In this episode of The Leadership Pod, I share with you five unique ideas on how you can become your visible and promote your contribution without being self-promotional.

In How to Become More Visible at Work (Without Being Self-Promotional), you will learn:

    • Why assuming your work will speak for itself is a mistake.

Many emerging leaders, job seekers and entrepreneurs want to be more visible on LinkedIn. It’s an incredibly important part of building your personal brand and online presence. When you build a strong personal brand online, it can lead to new job opportunities and clients.

There are many ways you can increase your visibility on LinkedIn to strengthen your personal brand. In Episode 033 of The Leadership Pod, I talked about how you can strategically comment and like LinkedIn posts of your ideal target connection.

In this week’s episode, I continue on with the same theme  and share more ideas on how you can engage with your ideal target connection on LinkedIn to become more visible in front of your ideal target connection and grow your network.

In Episode 034, “How to Increase Your Visibility on LinkedIn in 20-minutes a Day”, you will learn about:

    • Using the posts of your ideal target connection to increase your visibility.
    • Commenting on other people’s comments.
    • Using hashtags your ideal target connection follows to get in front of them.
    • Strategically connecting with your ideal target connection in an easy way.
    • Examples of all of the above tips.
