In this brief, somewhat whimsical episode, I discuss modern inventions that were first brought to the popular imagination by Star Trek. Star Trek originally aired in 1966. At the time, many products that we use today were considered far-fetched, if not impossible. Sometimes, the "impossible" is only due to a failure of imagination. 

The purpose of this program is to help you become a better leader. Innovation and, more importantly, empowering people to innovate by providing an environment where people are safe to experiment (and even fail), is an important part of leadership.

In this episode, I am going to talk about two competing theories that will change society. I am going to argue that one will lead us down a path to destruction; the other will lead us to the ends we actually seek—a more just society.  

Much of the hate and anger in society is caused by what we choose to focus upon. This is not a call for putting our heads in the sand. It is a call for a better method for achieving the ends that we hope to achieve.

In this episode I discuss the first assignment I give in my Leadership Development class. I ask them to find images that answer 4 questions: 1) What I believe leadership is, 2) How your boss approaches leadership, 3). What society thinks about it, and 4) What employees feel as a consequence.

While this appears to be a simple or silly assignment, when you look beneath the surface, you find that it reveals great insight into the both the nature of leadership and the students’ experience with leadership.

I will review 7 of my students’ submissions and you will see how much you can learn from this simple assignment. The purpose of this program is to help you become a better leader. If you are going to be the kind of leader that you would want to follow, you must understand how your leadership is perceived.

When the government of Delhi, India realized that there were too many Cobras, they took decisive government action. The net result: more cobras. How is that possible? It turns out that incentives matter, and people predictably respond to incentives.In this episode, I talk about unintended consequences. Leaders must be aware that the effects of their actions are not always what they want them to be. Sometimes they are impacted by unintended consequences.You can control your actions; you cannot necessarily control reactions.
