In the final episode of Season 1, Clare is joined by two long term thinkers for a surprisingly hopeful look into how COVID might affect the climate change discourse: Rebecca Huntley, one of Australia's foremost social researchers, and the author of 'How To Talk About Climate Change In a Way that Makes a Difference'; and Anna Skarbek, CEO of ClimateWorks Australia, and a founding director of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

Australia and the world currently face two catastrophic crises, and yet one has seen the total focus of governments while the other has not. COVID and climate change share many similarities-the threat of severe suffering and major economic consequences, the need for collaboration and change. So what have we learned from this one? What should we learn? And how do we make sure climate change action underpins all our goals as we work to rebuild and grow the Australian economy?

In this episode of The Long View, Clare is joined by two inspirational Aboriginal leaders: Linda Burney, a proud member of the Wiradjuri nation who became the first Aboriginal woman to serve in the Australian House of Representatives, and Inala Cooper, a Yawuru woman who serves as the Director of Murrup Barak, the Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development at University of Melbourne.

COVID-19 has been accompanied by massive social upheaval, with Black Lives Matter bringing about what appears to be a fundamental shift in the way this country thinks and talks about Indigenous affairs. Yet we still have no clear path forward on the Uluru Statement, and very little progress on the now changing Closing the Gap targets. So what does the future look like for this movement, and what needs to change? Linda and Inala share their hard-won and heartfelt insights on Black Lives Matter, activism vs pragmatism, compromise, disappointment, and what they need from allies who want to walk alongside them.

In this episode of The Long View, Clare looks at skills, vocational education and training with two skills experts: John Daley, former head of the Grattan Institute and now senior fellow at Grattan with a special focus on skills and education; and Megan Lilly, head of workforce development at the Australian Industry Group, the peak body for Australian industry.

It's clear that Australia's VET system isn't where it should be, with skills coming up again and again throughout this season. Businesses need more workers with better skills, young people need more guidance, and governments need to step up. COVID-19 presents both threats and opportunities: with unemployment skyrocketing and skilled migration now on hold, what are we going to do to retrain and re-skill our workforce? How can we ensure our training system is giving graduates the skills they need? Why is quality so low, and non-completion rates so high? And why on earth hasn't this been fixed already?

Seven Australians have been killed by domestic terrorism in the last decade. Eight Australian women were killed by their current or former partner in May, this year alone.

COVID-19 may have been especially dangerous to older people, but the COVID-19 recession will be especially harmful to the young. The industries most affected by the shutdown are dominated by young workers, many of whom are casually employed, and the ongoing impacts of a recession will be felt by this generation for years to come. But why were Australia's young people in such a precarious position in the first place?

This week on The Long View, Clare chats to three young women about the challenges facing young Australians in 2020: Shara Teo, an organiser and advocate with the United Workers Union; Tiana Sixsmith, a co-facilitator of YACVic's submission into the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System, who is from a regional background herself; and Nuriyah Haque, the Victorian State Director for Oaktree, and a member of this first group of Australians to graduate into a recession in almost 30 years.

Young people were already experiencing high rates of un- and underemployment, and they faced major difficulties getting a foothold in today's workforce, even before COVID struck. Mental health issues are more commonplace than any generation before them, and young people are becoming less engaged in the political process, with successive governments failing to address their concerns.

Why is it so difficult to get a decent start in today's workforce? Why are so many young people in insecure work? What is it that they want government to be doing to get things back on track for young people? And how do they feel about all that debt?
