In the early morning hours of September 2nd, 2002, the police received a 911 call from an affluent North Hollywood neighborhood. There was a Mercedes SUV on fire. When the fire was put out the police made a gruesome discovery. 2 bodies in the passenger seat of the burned-out SUV shot to death.

After Labor Day Weekend home improvement plans fell through. Richard and his wife Belinda made the last-minute decision to take their 2 children 5-year-old David and 5-month-old Melissa and their Basset Hound Droopy and go on a camping trip in the Siskiyou Mountains in Copper Oregon. This seemingly normal camping trip would end up going from a missing persons case to a homicide case in a period of months. And to this day the mystery remains unsolved.
