When you hear the words SECOND CHANCE where does your mind go? Maybe you think of someone messing up. Maybe you think of the criteria that you would use to potentially forgive someone. Maybe you think nobody deserves a second chance at all.
In this message given at FBC Kaufman, Mackey invites us into the grace of receiving our second chance. Even more so, he then challenges us to go counter-cultural in GIVING second chances to those around us. Could Jesus be calling us past our past and into a future of second chances?
Key Takeaways:
- How do you live God's dream despite past poor decisions?
- A second chance is an opportunity to become who God created you to be.
- "The Scandalous mathematics of grace." Phillip Yancey

Are you stressed? Hoping to leave 2020 in the rearview? You aren't alone. The American Psychological Association reports that nearly 8 in 10 adults (78%) say the coronavirus pandemic is a significant source of stress in their life. And in that stress, 2020 has revealed just how tightly we cling to worry, to anger, and to control. But what does Jesus say? How do we as Christians respond to the stress of a year like 2020?
In this sermon, Mackey walks through Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and proposes some trades. What might Jesus give to us if we were to let go of our worry, our anger, our control? Might it be the key we need to unlock newness of life in 2021.
Key takeaways:
Christians we are supposed to be grateful, right? Grace in Christ has been given to us after all! But why does the prayer of gratitude so often feel like a rote obligation? In this episode, Mackey reframes the true and ongoing power of God's grace, and teaches. us how to accept God's invitation into gratitude.
Key Takeaways: - The prayer of gratitude is more slow than fast. - The Giver is more important than the gift. - Listening is the beginning of prayer.
Sometimes we find ourselves stuck in the middle. We get stuck in a place where we're too big for what's behind us but still too small for what's ahead. In those moments, we must trust in the wisdom of God. In this episode, Mackey encourages us to trust in the Lord and remember that the only way we can grow into what is ahead is by going through the tough time of being stuck in the middle.
Key Takeaways -The only way we grow in that tension that we're in is by going through it. -We have to trust the wisdom of God. -What is impossible for man is possible with God.
Being part of God's community brings us closer to God. Our community helps us to be more like Christ, comforts us in times of struggle, and calls us out with love when we have gone astray. In this episode, Mackey explains that joining God's community is not optional; it is required to become as Christlike as we can and to bring ourselves ever closer to God.
Key Takeaways -Don't let being right keep you from being kind. -Mercy triumphs over judgment and leads to restoration. -Community comforts us in our troubles and calls us out in love.
When life goes in a direction we didn't expect, the evil one tempts us to abandon our hope in Jesus and to question God. No matter what storms come our way, we have to remember that Jesus is good, He loves us, and our hope must remain in Him. In this episode, Mackey encourages us to remember that real faith and stability comes from relying on Jesus despite the storms that come our way. God doesn't bring the storms, but he can use them to test and solidify our faith in the Lord.
Key Takeaways -Jesus is the real deal and has been proven genuine generation after generation. -Jesus is more interested in our growth than our comfort. -Real faith and stability is not the absence of storms; it is seeing things going a way we didn't expect and being faithful anyway.
It is very easy to look the part without being the real deal. It's much harder to actually be the real deal. That's because being the real deal comes with a much higher cost, and not everyone is willing to pay up. But being the real deal for yourself and your family will also pay out much more over time than simply pretending to be a person of character. In this episode, Mackey explains why he wants to be the real deal for family and how he goes about it.
Key Takeaways
-Don't just look the part, be the real deal for your family. -Sometimes being the real deal comes with a high cost, so be willing to pay up. -Hold each other accountable for being the real deal.
Spiritual maturity has nothing to do with age and everything to do with listening to God. We become mature and complete when we listen to God. This listening is at the beginning of prayer. When we listen to God's voice, he keeps us on track. Listening is active in a couple of different ways: 1) We must actively listen to what God is leading us to in life, and 2) we must listen to the Word with our actions, for example by loving each other as He loves us.
Key Takeaways: -We become mature and complete when we listen to God. -Do not merely listen to the Word, do what it says. -God thinks highly of you even when you don't.
