The concept originated in Freudian psychoanalytic theory, where Sigmund Freud coined the term "Madonna-Whore complex" (or "psychic impotence") to describe men who are unable to feel sexual desire for a woman they love and respect - the Madonna - but can only be aroused by women they devalue or disrespect the Whore.
