I got the idea for this episode in the middle of a global heat wave and though the scorching temps seem to be dying down a bit, the music out of Africa this summer has been hot hot hot.
With the exception of the third excerpt from BKO the rest of these records were released this summer and that's pretty damned impressive. I can't say I've heard five rock records out of the U.S. or the U.K. that come close to this level of funkiness, entertainment and listener satisfaction.
From the toasting, Devo-esque tunes of the first group, Nana Benz du Togo to the variety on the new African Head Charge record, to the sheer prog like virtuosity of the new record from Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy feel free to get your peep on.
Excerpts from this episode:
Nana Benz du Togo: Tousse
Yamaya: Karma
BKO: Bamako
African Head Charge: I'm a Winner
Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy: Doose Mam
Jantra: Ozali

Have you ever hung out with an investment banker? I have had that great misfortune and it does indeed make you appreciate musicians because bankers are boring af. So if you can get your head arount that comparison and manage to get around the stereotype that musicians are lazy do nothings, try to appreciate musicians who do something to make the world more tolerable.
This week we do what we do, we roll around genre wise kicking it off with some hip hop, roll into some cumbia out of Colombia, a rare indie electronic track, some reggae and we spin out from there.
Hey Happy July 4th, don't blow your fingers off!

Episode 57! Peep the fancy Latin episode title this week and bask in the old school vibes. It translates to 'against endless repetition' and it's a sentiment worth spreading around.
It was inspired by the short except in this episode by Angel Bat Dawid: 'This endless repetition is like a Chain around the Spirit. And it is a reflection of the denial of the future to the Negro in the American way of life.' In the episode I left out the second part of the title due to a screenshot I do of the playlist every time I record an episode. That is the whole title, it's awesome, all the titles and the music on the record are great and I have given Ms. Dawid extra space in the show notes here as a form of amends for my error.
There's other great music in this episode and I hope you enjoy it and appreciate both the variety and the quality.
Excerpts from this episode:
Benefits: Warhorse
Nathan Fake: Boss Core
Protoje: Hills
GEL: Bitchmade
Angel Bat Dawid: This endless repetition is like a Chain around the Spirit. And it is a reflection of the denial of the future to the Nego in the American way of life.
Bassidi Kone: Wawe A Here
Modern Cosmology: Consent for Life

Episode 56: Winter 23 Besties!
When it comes 'round to the best of/end of year lists for music the lists are tilted towards releases from the second half of the year. The Magic Organ aims to rectify that sitch with this episode, Winter '23 Besties.
Mistakes, I always rectify my mistakes in the show notes. I got my band name and album name mixed up for the the band Son Rompe Pera and the album entitled Chimborazo. My apologies to the band and they get an extra shout out.
Excerpts from this episode:
Skech185 & Jeff Markey: East Side Summer
Son Rompe Pera: Cumbia is the New Punk
La Roche: Esperimante Abbe
King Ayisoba: People Talk Too Much

Episode 55: Give 'Em the Business! The internet's only 13 minute multi genre new music podcast returns with another backpack full of bangers. We kick it off with some organic, janky electronic music from Japan, head into some junk funk from the Netherlands, get down for a bit of roots and culture, give a quick shout to Satan, get a little Brazilian lushness oozing across the brain pan, and head out with some chill sitch country music from a Canadian gent.
Yes, yes the Magic Organ is worldwide. Enjoy this music if you can, spread the word if you can, stream these artists if you can!

Episode 54! The War Against Boring. I guess the most boring thing to do right here in this space is to say everything sucks and it's boring but if I've joined the fight against boring I wouldn't do the predictable boring thing but say hey there's a lot of reasons why things can get so boring, have some sympathy for all the folks out there who struggle to get by and you're a jerk asking them to entertain you, and that the machine (our society) that produces all this boring, predictable culture is very complex. Whew, boring may be boring but the reasons why are certainly not.
I hope this episode doesn't bore you!
Excerpts from this episode:
Arif Merbaghi: Begging the Moon
Mizmor & Thou: Drover of Man
Shovel Dance Collective: II: In Charlestown there Dwelled a Lass

Episode 53! Always be projecting, as in always be pushing new flavors out there into the world. Kinda random title, but hey there's a lot of randomness going on out there.
This episode kicks off with a new favorite record just released by Liv.e, a rich stew of funk/r&b/soul/electronic music. It's a great record full of bangers. Then some Mediterranean dancefloor banging into some proggy, funky shredding and on and on it goe, you know how the Magic Organ does it.
Excerpts from this episode:
Liv.e: Wild Animals
Satellites: Disko Arabesque
Polyphia: Genesis
Screaming Females: Brass Bell
Acid Arab: Ras El Ain
Gaston de la Cruz Quintet: Hamal

Episode 52, a celebration of a music podcast episode without any Grammy award winners or nominees. I thnk Fantastic Negrito was nominated for a Grammy award last year and I like his last record but it's not often that I traffic in it!
Why be proud of being Grammy free??!! Cuz you know a lot of this mainstream music business is about booty and money and drama and business and not so much if at all about music. Musicians who shall remain nameless using their records to sell clothes and sneakers and intimate apparel. Weird.
In this episode we kinda roll in the chill sitch part of town, some nostalgic jazz from Sam Sadigursky, some ambient (I love me some ambient music), some Latin Jazz and we finish up with Oddisee, an incredibly musical hip hop gent who stuff his arrangements almost beyond belief.
Excerpts from this episode:
Leikeli47: Chitty Bang
Lila Tirando a Violeta: Tungsten Tears
Sam Sadigursky: Fallsburg Steps
Ben Bondy: Wish
David Virelles: Portico
Black Flower: Half Liquid
Oddisee: Already Knew

Episode 51, first episode of 2023! It has been a while and we are now (hopefully) up with our new podcast hosting service. The Magic Organ is a one person operation so all administrative, technical, creative, editing and plumbing issues all flow downhill to one sap.
Episode 51, Mixed Bangers, is the result of a lot of year end list listening. We kick it off with Systema Solar out of Colombia, get into more dancefloor banging with some NYC techno from Louie Vega and it just goes on and on from there.
Excerpts from this episode:
System Solera: Comer de Verdad
Louie Vega: All My Love
La Roche: Liye Liye
Ashenspire: Plattenbau Persephone Praxis
Kassmasse & Protoje: Mela Mela
Wesli: Kay Koule Trouba
