Dave Weigel then joins to tackle his story in Semafor outlining reports of an incredibly secretive, and generally anonymous network of conservative influencers raking in five figures off of one meeting for promulgating sexual smears of Kamala Harris. After briefly expanding on the parallels between this story and the recently released DOJ indictment on Russian money influencing right-wing media, and unpacking the greater questions this raises about the funding mechanism of right-wing circles, Dave, Sam, and Emma dive deep into the US presidential election, the major missteps made so far by the fatigued Trump and nascent Harris campaigns, and debate preview, before wrapping up by briefly touching on the role of on Robert Kennedy in all of this.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Benjamin Shestakofsky, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, to discuss his recent book Behind the Startup: How Venture Capital Shapes Work, Innovation, and Inequality. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on presidential polling, the Harris, Trump and RFK campaigns, the DOJ v. Google II, IRS funding, the GOP’s government shutdown, Israel’s slaughter of its own citizens on October 7, the murder of Aysenur Eygi, and the end of the “return the hostages” pretense for Israel, before listening in to Fox’s suggestions for Trump ahead of tomorrow night’s debate. Professor Benjamin Shestakofsky then joins, diving right into the rise of Venture Capitalism out of late 1970s/early ‘80s reforms that shifted economic and corporate power to financiers and investors, such as the opening of pensions to riskier assets and dropping capital gains taxation, pushing businesses to put a much greater emphasis on stock prices and the promise of immediate growth instead of production or sustainability. Next, Professor Shestakofsky tackles his time working within and researching the world of venture capital, giving some practical examples of the risky and unsustainable mentality that drives the industry, stepping back to walk through some of the extreme examples of the exploitation it relies on, including obscuring the failed promises of their technologies by relying en masse on low-wage human labor – be it in the Philippines or Las Vegas. Expanding on this, Benjamin walks Sam and Emma through the impact the VC revolution has had on undermining the quality of services and helping to spur the “enshittification” of the internet, before wrapping up with some alternatives to this Silicon Valley mentality and the policies that can be used to incentivize that change. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Trump flounder in the face of more legitimate sexual assault allegations and unpack his absurd statements on gender-affirming surgery… in schools, and his platforming (alongside much of the media) of the ridiculous Venezuelan gang story out of Colorado. Jeet Heer then joins, as he and Emma parse through some high(and low)lights from Dana Bash’s interview of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, walking through her representation of her commitment to a progressive domestic agenda – including a better defense of ‘Bidenomics’ than the Biden team has ever offered – while still presenting herself as something “new,” and parsing through her steadfast rhetoric toward continuing support for Israel and their genocide. Expanding on this latter point, Heer unpacks Biden’s approach to the genocide in the wake of dropping out of the 2024 election, from his continued commitment to the Abraham Accords to some inklings of sandbagging a future withdrawal of support, before touching on the role Iran is playing in the region and the future of US Foreign Policy. Next, Jeet and Emma look at another VP trying to clean up their President’s mess, watching JD Vance perfectly show why he’s been called (by Jeet, in this very interview) “the worst VP pick since Aaron Burr” in his response to Trump’s recent comments criticizing Florida’s abortion ban.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Neil J. Young, co-host of the Past Present podcast, to discuss his recent book Coming Out Republican: A History of the Gay Right. Then, she speaks with Hal Singer, economics professor at the University of Utah, to discuss some of Kamala Harris' recent economic policy proposals. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s expanding offensive in the West Bank, major polling bumps for Dems, the first Harris/Walz interview, Trump’s Q invocation, Trump’s would-be assassin, Biden’s major victory over drug prices, SCOTUS’ continuing attacks on student debt relief, Brazil vs. Elon Musk, Cornell’s labor action, and corruption in journalism, before parsing through the overwhelming threat of every type of violence that Palestinians face in the West Bank. Neil J. Young then joins, diving right into the roots of the gay Republican movement in the Cold War-era Lavender Scare, an overwhelming attempt by US federal, state, and local governments to criminalize, surveil, and punish queer Americans, be they politicians, military, police, or just every-day citizens, leading up to a 1978 ballot initiative from the religious right in California to ban queer people from teaching in public schools that saw an overwhelming organizing effort from gay Republicans to shoot down the initiative and prove that they belong in the GOP, a belief that took root among white gay men in San Francisco, before taking off nationally. Moving forward, Young then looks to the major role played by California Governor and US President Ronald Reagan over the outset and evolution of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in pushing rhetoric and policy that sought to otherize and demonize the homosexual “lifestyle” as the root of the crisis, and helping to launch a period of severe backlash to the social progress of the 1960s, particularly among the right. After expanding on the role of the public school system, and specifically the targeting of public school teachers, in right-wing attempts to marginalize and exclude queer folks, Neil and Emma walk through some of the major parallels we see with the challenges facing queer Americans today, wrapping up with the importance of understanding the immense stakes of this moment within its historical context. Professor Hal Singer then jumps right into the story of the US fight against inflation over the last few years, tackling the roles of price gouging and a corrupt rental market in exacerbating this economic crisis, including an expansive conversation on RealPage’s landlord price-fixing suit, and the absurd arguments that economists and elites used to obscure these root causes. Next, Professor Singer and Emma walk through the recent economic proposals from the Harris campaign that focus on these particular issues and what they mean within the context of the transition between Biden and her administrations, before briefly challenging the focus on anti-trust as a tool to prevent price gouging, and wrapping up the interview with an assessment of Biden major victory in drug price negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry, and how Harris can expand on and learn from that win.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch JD Vance and Tim Walz make clear the party divide on unions, Royce White insults the “cuck mentality” that won Trump his first campaign, and JD Vance’s cousin, BD, gives a peak behind the ol’ country curtain of JD’s campaign. It’s Hump Day! Emma speaks with Cole Stangler, France-based journalist covering politics, housing, and labor, author of the book Paris Is Not Dead: Surviving Hypergentrification In The City Of Light, to discuss the recent developments after the French elections, and the government's efforts to form a coalition. Then, she speaks with Michael Brenes, historian at Yale, author of the Warfare and Welfare newsletter on SubStack, author of the upcoming book The Rivalry Peril: How Great-Power Competition Threatens Peace And Weakens Democracy, co-authored with Van Jackson, to discuss his recent piece in the Boston Review entitled "The Harris Doctrine." First, Emma runs through updates on Jack Smith’s newest indictment, Harris’ first sitdown interview as Democratic candidate for President, GOP struggles in Georgia and North Carolina, Larry Hogan’s gains in Maryland, the Trump campaign, polling, the RFK campaign, Israel’s expansion of their genocidal offensive to the West Bank, Biden’s heavy-handed pier mishap, Meta, and Nassau County’s mask ban, before expanding on Jack Smith’s updated Jan 6 indictment and the response from the Trump campaign. Cole Stangler then dives right into a background on France’s recent snap elections, called by Emmanuel Macron in the face of the rising popularity of the far-right, resulting in a left-wing plurality in parliament unified by their anti-fascist aims, with the Macronist center-right coalition finishing in second and the far-right in third. From here, Stangler walks through Macron’s astonishing decision over the weeks since to take a hardline stance on refusing to name a left-wing prime minister or allowing the establishment of a left-wing government, taking advantage of a lack of constitutional clarity in the period he is allowed to take in naming a successor. After expanding on how this maneuver is ideologically consistent with Macron’s politics, Cole explores the overwhelmingly (and unsurprisingly) negative – but productive – response from the French left, unpacking their plan for pushing Macron to fulfill his constitutional duties, before wrapping up with an assessment of what Macron’s failure to name a new PM means for the immediate-future of French governance. Emma is then joined by Michael Brenes, who jumps right into the central parallels in his comparison between the infamous Henry Kissinger and Biden’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, touching on their expansive roles in administrations pushing foreign policy projects to maintain and strengthen American primacy with little-to-no moral limit, and walking through the particular role Sullivan has played in advancing Joe Biden’s hyper-Zionist agenda despite overwhelming public disapproval. Shifting focus, Brenes then looks to Harris’ recently named National Security Advisory, Philip Gordon, unpacking his record as Middle East coordinator in Obama’s second administration, including his objections to US interventionism and regime change, stance on Israeli apartheid and Palestinian self-determination, and role in advancing the Iran deal, despite Israel’s objections. After expanding on some more problematic (if predictable) elements of Gordon’s background, Michael parses through the lines between Harris’ critique of Biden’s approach to Israel’s genocide and real signs of a differing agenda, and why Biden’s failures offer important lessons in the contradictions of US primacy and imperialism.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by RM Brown as they watch Trump call on the Lord to come down and count ballots in California, parse through Tulsi Gabbard’s not-so-shocking endorsement of Donald Trump, and listen to Glenn Beck unpack the American Oligarchy. PBD gets some valuable ‘tainment out of Brett Weinstein’s cuckoldry at the hands of Elon Musk, and a West Bank settler unpacks colonialism’s bad rap, plus, your IMs!
