Sam and Emma speak with Van Jackson, senior lecturer in international relations at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and writer of the Un-Diplomatic newsletter on SubStack, to discuss his recent book The Rivalry Peril: How Great-Power Competition Threatens Peace and Weakens Democracy, co-authored with Michael Brenes. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s tariffs on Mexico and Canada, fallout from the Trump/Vance confrontation with Zelenskyy, Trump’s attempt to cook the books on the US GDP, Trump’s newest crypto scam, US-based money laundering, RFK’s measles dance, Marco Rubio’s billions for Israel, Trump assault on Social Security, the DHS’ IRS scheme, and the Mayoral Campaign of noted sex pest Andrew Cuomo, also admiring the full-throated spinelessness of GOP representatives Kieth Self and Roger Marshall when faced with constituent backlash at Town Halls. Van Jackson then joins, diving right into the effective myth the US has built up around the Cold War as a beneficial struggle between two great powers, a belief central to the evolution of the US’ counter-insurgency-focused regime of primacy that has developed in the power vacuum left by the Soviet Union, and why the US Foreign policy apparatus has been so resolute, from the Cheneys to the Biden Administration, in pivoting to a new great power struggle with China. Expanding on this, Jackson walks through the last couple of decades of US-China hawkery, with the shrinking dividends of Neoliberal globalization pushing both the US and Chinese economies toward economic nationalism, with the US establishment frantically attempting to cling to a dying world order of complete US primacy, as it corrupts and reshapes our politics domestically while contributing to death and destruction globally. After tackling how the Trump to Biden to Trump 2.0 pipeline effectively streamlined the US’ commitment to an anti-China pivot, and why Trump’s buddies in Silicon Valley are set to benefit greatly from this tension, Van, Sam, and Emma wrap up by touching on the greater imperialist nature of Trump’s foreign policy, and why US-Chinese relations have trapped much of the developing world into choosing between Chinese lending power and American hegemony.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch the new state-backed-media (the Joe Rogan Experience) clear the stage to let Elon Musk lie to the American public about what the Trump/Musk regime is up to (and why), and listen to Marjorie Taylor Greene’s boytoy attempt to confront Zelenskyy about his fashion sense. Hanno Hauenstein then joins, first briefly running through the rise and fall of Germany’s “Traffic Light coalition” between Social Democrats, Greens, and Neoliberals in the vacuum of Merkel’s coalition, until the growing threat of the far-right over the past few years saw the centrist coalition – like many other centrist governments in the West – attempt to co opt the extremist AfD’s talking points under softer, liberal language, unfortunately gutting their own popularity instead of AfD’s, with the party winning 20% of the vote. After expanding on AfD’s recent evolution, and the rest of the German right’s theoretical refusal to go into coalition with AfD, Hanno and Emma briefly touch on the genuine boost felt by the Left party in the recent election, dive much deeper into the collapse of the Social Democrats and Greens, and the major anti-Palestinian crackdown that has faced the German left over the last year and a half, before wrapping up by emphasizing the threat posed by a growing far-right in Germany. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack New York’s ongoing Democratic Primary for Mayor, from Zohran Mamdani separating himself from the progressive pack to the ever-developing Eric Adams crashout. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Chris Geidner of the Law Dork newsletter on SubStack, to provide some updates on a number of court challenges to the Trump Administration's directives & executive orders. First, Sam runs through updates on the GOP’s budget resolution, US-Ukraine relations, Elon’s role in the Trump Administration, DOGE, an impending government shutdown, the GOP’s town hall-phobia, Trump’s “Gold Card” immigration plan, the EPA, longshoremen’s contract win, Oregon nurses’ contract win, and Bernie’s move on arms sales to Israel, before watching AOC eviscerate the GOP’s plan to cut taxes for the wealthy and benefits for the poor. After touching on the constructive, methodical nature of the still-developing legal cases against the Trump Administration, Chris and Sam wrap up with the insanity of Trump’s impoundment maneuver and overwhelming attack on equal opportunity employment.

Sam speaks with Eric Blanc, assistant professor of Labor Studies & Employment Relations at Rutgers University, organizer trainer in the Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee (EWOC), to discuss his recent book We Are the Union: How Worker-to-Worker Organizing is Revitalizing Labor and Winning Big. First, Sam runs through updates on the disarray among federal workers, the House GOP’s budget shitshow, Trump’s attacks on USAID, NIH, and the FDA, the firing of top military lawyers and JCOS chairmen, SCOTUS, a far-right surge in Germany, and Dan Bongino’s new role with the FBI, before expanding on the absurdity of Elon Musk’s recent request to ALL federal employees to justify their job in five bullet points. Professor Eric Blanc then joins, diving right into the role of the “Red State Revolt” of 2018 in setting the blueprint for the ongoing wave of bottom-up labor organizing that has spread across the US post-pandemic, with non-unionized taking the reigns in southern states where union-organizing was all but dead,  also briefly touching on the historically pro-management role of the US Government, with even Biden’s contextually pro-union NLRB only offering limited support to workers, and why Trump’s sharp cut-off of federal NLRB action still leaves local and regional organizing to continue as is. Stepping back, Professor Blanc unpacks how the post-pandemic union push saw the rise of genuinely new models for worker organizing, looking to efforts like the Starbucks unionizing campaign to emphasize how worker-to-worker organizing, especially when capitalizing on political and social momentum, can completely upend the labor balance of one of the biggest corporations in the US, touching on the difference in risk-assessment between these smaller movements and massive unions, before expanding on why these bottom-up organizing efforts are anything but antithetical to large unions, and offer them an incredible opportunity to capitalize on the growing power of the rank-and-file. After briefly musing on the future of the ongoing labor renaissance in the US, Eric and Sam wrap up with the incredible evolution of the Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee from a Pandemic-era labor resource to one of the biggest national resources for budding union efforts, why backing our federal workers (and their unions) has to be at the center of the fight against Trump, and what those of us on the outside can do to help.

Van Lathan and Emma then dive deep into the state (surprisingly positive) of the Leftist media ecosystem, the utter failure of the Democratic Party to identify, speak to, or govern for their base, and why MAGA’s obsession with liberal defectors is so enchanting to reactionary media figures. Lathan implores Emma to dip her podcasting toes into pop culture,  before wrapping up by touching on what he learned from covering Gaza.

Tyler Vasseur then walks Emma through the recent decision by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to step down from his post, exploring DeJoy’s nomination under Trump 1.0 to spearhead an effort to privatize the USPS, Biden’s decision to keep him on, and why it was his failure to privatize fast enough that led him to get pushed out, and what that could mean for the future of the institution. Next, Vasseur dives deep into the National Association of Letter Carrier’s historic “No” vote on a contract with USPS after nearly two years of negotiations, highlighting various failures in the agreement, including keeping wages in line with inflation. After expanding on the “Vote No” campaign efforts, Tyler unpacks why their biggest push in this bargaining process is for the right to strike, with the ongoing bargaining effort now lasting well over 600 days, wrapping up the show by highlighting coming rallies to support NALC’s fight.

First, Emma dives into Elon Musk and Trump press secretary Karoline Leavitt lying about social security and the supposed tens of millions of dead people receiving benefits, debunking those outlandish claims. Then Emma speaks with Molly and they discuss the Trump administration and its associates' connections to the crypto industry, in particular their animosity towards regulatory agencies like the FDIC & CFPB. Molly explains how crypto stakeholders, folks like Marc Andreessen and other members of the "PayPal Mafia", have, under the guise of the specter of "de-banking", lobbied and pushed for traditional finance to embrace the crypto industry, in ways such as integrating crypto into exchange traded funds or ETF's, so there are other avenues for people to interface with Bitcoin and crypto without having to actually go through all of the hoops it takes to do so (converting funds into BitCoins, storing them in BitCoin wallets, etc.) Molly dives further into how the crypto industry lobbies traditional financial institutions and banks to get what they want, and explains further what people like Andreessen really want out of defanging regulatory institutions like the FDIC and CFPB.
