The Mana Pool

Chewie, Mike, Brian, and Dirk have been talking about Magic: The Gathering on the internet for almost 10 years (at the time of this writing). Since there are so many shows about strategy and tournaments, these dorks focus on all the fun you can have with the game outside of that, from flavor to philosophy to game design to history to whatever else we can come up with. We're funny, we're serious about what we do, and we love it!

It's that time again! Due to scheduling and technological problems we weren't able to record a normal episode this week, but thankfully we had a canned episode ready! A couple weekends ago the dorks gathered for some good old Magic-playing fun!

Dirk is playing Damia, Sage of Stone. Mike is playing Dakkon Blackblade. Brian is playing Maelstrom Wanderer. And Chewie is debuting his new Marath, Will of the Wild deck that you heard about last episode! This game goes on for the entirety of the episode, with all sorts of ridiculous goings-on going on.

And this wasn't one of the long, grindy, miserable, please-just-let-it-end long games. It was a long game with plenty of absolutely insane plays where everyone got a chance to shine. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

We begin this episode with a first-impressions review of the Arena of the Planeswalkers miniatures board game! Three of us took the time to figure out how to play (sort of) and successfully completed a game! We're coming at it from the perspective of Magic players trying it out, since most of us have no experience with miniatures games.

After that Brian's got another Magic Mad Lib, which is more hilarious than usual when all is said and done!

And after that it's time for a long-forgotten segment of the show - Out of the Deck Box! Because Chewie actually built a new Commander deck for the first time in some number of years, he's gonna tell you all about it this episode!

It's time for another Mythic Conscription here on The Mana Pool! We're going through Mercadian Masques and trying (accent on trying) to find the rares that might possibly have been mythics if there was such a thing back then. We had some trouble this time around. Masques block was the beginning of a period of powering down, since the last block was the stupidly overpowered Urza block.

After that we take a quick look at the recently-revealed decklists for the Zendikar Vs Eldrazi Duel Decks for the sole purpose of checking out the new cards! The handful of new cards show off a mess of new AND returning mechanics! Check them out, they're pretty awesome!

The full list for From the Vault: Angels was revealed! Because so many of the included angels were touchstones of our Magic-playing careers, we decided to actually go deep on these! We're taking a look at each one and discussing why it's in the FTV, drooling over new art, and remembering our own experiences. And that's only half the episode!

One of our awesome Kickstarter rewards was for a Story Circle that we would then put together and send to the backer. And on this episode, we're finally getting around to it. He wanted a Captain Sisay deck, so this one's for you John! To see the full list that we came up with, check the link below!

After an unexpected hiatus last week, most of the dorks are back with a vengeance this week! Dirk is unforunately unable to join us, but we've got a replacement that is very much suited to the topic at hand. Chris Lansdell, former podcasting whore, is with us to talk coverage. Magic coverage has been a thing for a long time, and it's been a fairly regular thing for a pretty good amount of time. But what would it take to get Magic coverage on mainstream sports stations? We're tackling that discussion and all the tangential nonsense that goes with it!

There are several bits of news to cover first, and you'll find all the links below! And don't forget to follow Chris on Twitter @lansdellicious and check out his articles on SCG!
