The Mana Pool

Chewie, Mike, Brian, and Dirk have been talking about Magic: The Gathering on the internet for almost 10 years (at the time of this writing). Since there are so many shows about strategy and tournaments, these dorks focus on all the fun you can have with the game outside of that, from flavor to philosophy to game design to history to whatever else we can come up with. We're funny, we're serious about what we do, and we love it!

PREVIEWS! Magic Origins is right around the corner, so we've got a lot of cards to hit! Since the new preview method makes hitting every card virtually impossible, we're just hitting up the mythics and then whatever else catches our eye. There are a lot of awesome cards in the new set, so we're pretty excited!

There's also some discussion at the beginning about the upcoming rules changes. I think I might be softening my stance just slightly. Be sure you stick around to the end to catch a nice happy feel-good story!

We're joined by another Kickstarter backer this week! Aaron comes on to talk about being That Guy. No no, not THAT That Guy. Not one of the bad ones. But the guy that's been playing forever and has lots of cards and lots of decks and actually has some money to spend on the game. Some casual players frown on That Guy, which gives That Guy some kind of stigma. Aaron wants to address that stigma and help change the opinion of That Guy. That Guy might not be all bad. You might even be able to learn something from That Guy's experiences! So don't dump on That Guy!

Of course it's also Magic Origins preview season! And today the last of the five double-faced Planeswalkers were revealed, so we're going to take the last bit of the show to cover them. And the new mechanics that we haven't talked about yet, Renown and Spell Mastery!

The real purpose of this show, like most of the stuff I do, is to entertain you – the listener. Rather than asking the same old questions that everyone else does, I’m looking to give you a slightly more off-the-wall look into these Magic players and judges and what-have-you by catching them off guard and putting them on the spot. This episode is the first of four, and covers the first handful of people to answer my questions.

Appearing on this episode are MTGBroDeals writer (and purveyor of fine bacon) Zeki Alikaya, Not Another Magic Podcast host Jack LaCroix, Higher Standards host Renee Hupp, Pitt Imps host Angelo, CommanderCast writer Hayes (the Hayes), Level 3 Judge & former Judgecast host Riki Hayashi, and StarCityGames own Ben Bleiweiss. Of course I also talked to some well-known players! On this episode you'll hear answers from Osyp Lebedowicz, Gerard Fabiano, Gaudenis Vidugiris, and Jacob Wilson.

Hope you enjoy! Let me know what your answers would be! And keep an eye out for the next batch of Three Questions from Grand Prix Charlotte coming VERY soon!

The dorks are loose at Grand Prix Charlotte! Chewie is there with his fancy-schmancy media badge asking people Three Questions and also checking in with the other dorks between rounds. Brian is playing his Jeskai Ascendancy combo deck! Mike is playing his Loam Assault deck! The other guys from our room (#Team230) are also playing in the main event. JT, who you know from previous episodes, is playing Merfolk. Stark Maximum, who you know from a recent Fifteen Minutes of Fame, is playing his GW Tokens deck.

This is a pretty normal Field Recordings episode, with Chewie tracking down the other dorks between rounds as often as possible to find out what's going on, and said other dorks telling you what happened in that round. There's a fairly large gap in the recording due to exhaustion, difficulty finding dorks, having other plans, and more exhaustion. But Mike and Chewie went back and covered everything we missed in the car on the way home!

Of course we can't stay on target completely, it's us! Other tales are contained within this episode. There's the horrible, horrible motel room! And the massive Podcaster Dinner that happened Saturday night! And the cop that flashed his lights and siren behind us while we were recording! We hope everyone enjoys this episode as much as we enjoyed making it! And for those of you we met in Charlotte, it was GREAT to meet you! Hopefully we can meet more of you in the future!

Grand Prix Charlotte happened last weekend, so of course I was there asking Three Questions!

Appearing on this episode are SCG commentators Cedric Phillips & Patrick Sullivan, L3 Judge John Alderfer, cosplayer Christine Sprankle, WotC coverage guys Adam Styborski & Corbin Hosler, and L2 Judge & former podcast whore Chris Lansdell! Of course I also talked to a fair share of well-known players! On this episode you'll hear answers from Brad Nelson, Gerry Thompson, Patrick Dickmann, Brian Kibler, Alexander Hayne, Chris VanMeter, Willy Edel, and someone I never thought I'd actually meet in person, Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa.

Hope you enjoy! Let me know what your answers would be! And keep an eye out for the next batch of Three Questions from Grand Prix Charlotte coming VERY soon!
