  • Bella White | The Marinade Episode 147

Welcome to The Marinade, a free-flowing conversation about the creative process with creative people. Each episode we welcome musicians, actors, comedians, authors, visual artists, filmmakers- anyone who creates art to talk about how and why we make stuff.

This is Episode 147 and our guest is Bella White. Bella is a singer and songwriter who grew up in Calgary, Canada. Her outstanding debut record Just Like Leaving introduced her to the world. Her follow up which is called Among Other Things is one of my favorites of the year.

I got to catch up with Bella at her hotel the night after she played with Band of Horses at the House of Blues just outside of Orlando, FL. You'll hear tourists boarding buses to Disney next to where we were sitting on a gorgeous Florida morning. We talked about her musical education being Berklee adjacent, her tour with Band of Horses, whether we're more Animal Kingdom or Epcot, and so much more.

  • Jobi Riccio | The Marinade Episode 146

Jobi Riccio hikes into The Marinade. Jobi is a singer and songwriter from Morrison, CO, whose debut album Whiplash on Yep Roc records has garnered praise from multi-Grammy award winning modern songwriting legend Jason Isbell.

Her Country author Marissa R. Moss in her Don't Rock the Inbox newsletter said Riccio's song "Sweet" is "A little bit classic country, a little bit nineties Sheryl Crow kiss-off, and that's about as winning a combination as you can get."

We caught up with Jobi via Zoom to talk about growing up in idyllic surroundings, commitment to craft, cultivating community, chronic dog boners (stay with us) and so much more.

The song you are hearing in this episode is "For Me It's You" from Jobi Riccio's Whiplash.

Jordan is the lead singer and principal songwriter of his band Jordan Foley & The Wheelhouse, who just released their debut self-titled record in August of 2023. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Foley now rests his head just down the street from my home in Orlando, FL. Y'all, this record is outstanding and I personally know how much Jordan and his band have put into the making of it. He is a dear friend and I am honored to bring you this conversation.

  • Van Plating Returns | The Marinade Episode 144

This is Episode 144, and our guest for the second time is Van Plating. Van Plating is a singer, songwriter, and virtuoso violin player from Lakeland, Florida, whose latest record Orange Blossom Child is a personal examination of the place that raised her.

We caught up at Van Plating's beautiful home in central Florida with our bellies full of Indian food and glasses full of rum. Trigger warning, everyone. Van opened up about a near death experience she had a few years ago. It is a harrowing story and I don't want anyone to be caught off guard by the details.

  • Jenny Owen Youngs | The Marinade Episode 143

This is Episode 143 and our guest is Jenny Owen Youngs. Jenny is a singer, songwriter, author, and podcaster originally from New Jersey who now makes her home in Maine. She has written mega hits for the likes of Pitbull and Panic! At the Disco, but my introduction to her music was at Jack Rabbits, a small rock club in Jacksonville, FL, ten years ago. Jenny stood out on a stage that included heavyweight songwriters Chuck Ragan and Rocky Votolato. Her songs have been featured in the likes of Bojack Horseman, Grey's Anatomy, and Weeds. Her Buffy the Vampire Slayer podcast Buffering has spawned its own subculture.

It has been over a decade since Jenny's last full length solo record but the wait is over this September. Her gorgeous collection of songs "Avalanche" is out on September 22, 2023. It is a stunning album that showcases all of what makes Jenny Owen Youngs a special creative human.
