Historic Annapolis has a tough job on their hands! They are tasked with preserving and protecting the history of Annapolis--it's people, places and things.  So, what happens when a newly elected Mayor wants to build a large hotel? There are clashes, and then reasoned cooperation! Today, we continue our monthly series (no set schedule other than monthly) about beer.  We have a huge distributer of beer right here in Annapolis--Katcef Brothers Inc. and they have a ton of experts on hand to de-mystify beer for us.  Now, full disclosure--I like beer! I like beer a lot!  But, I am not a beer snob and a Bud Light will suit me just fine.  This month, Lauren Hamilton joined us again and brought along Mike LeViseur from Katcef and Josh Barr from The Military Bowl!

Four years ago, Katcef came up with an idea to honor heroes in the lives of everyday people. Who's Your Hero was born. Four years later it is kicking off again on November 11, 2018 at 1pm at Heroes Pub in West Annapolis. Budweiser has forged a new partnership with Jim Beam and created Bud Copper Lager for a limited time. And finally, Josh Barr is one of the movers and shakers of the Military Bowl and we talk about the game, the parade, the Clydesdales, and all of the excitement surrounding this New Year's Eve event! Louise Kirk and Chandra Jackson are warriors!  Both of them are breast cancer survivors (Louise, 5 years and Chandra for 15) and both of them paddle with the Annapolis Dragon Boat Club! In this episode (John thinks it is one of the most powerful episodes) we talk about sobering statistics (1 in 8 women will be affected). We discuss why African American women are more likely to die from it. And we talk about paddling and how it helps men and women recover. But the Annapolis Dragon Boat Club is a lot more than helping survivors rebuild their strength. It's about community, camaraderie, family, and surviving! We purposely missed Breast Cancer Awareness month by a day -- we should be aware of it every month--not just October! In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake! This USS Sioux City will be steaming up the Chesapeake Bay on November 10th to prepare for her commissioning at the Naval Academy on the 17th. The week is full of opportunities for the community to see the ship, support the ship and it's crew and celebrate this once (maybe twice) in a lifetime event...unless you are in the Navy...then maybe not so much! But it starts on Saturday the 10th with the arrival. The Veterans' Classic basketball tournament is on the 11th with a Maryland Vs Navy game in hoops! Plenty of opportunity to see the ship during the week. The official commissioning is at 9am on Saturday the 17th, and it all wraps up with Navy's final home football game of the season at the stadium as they take on Tulsa at 330pm on the 17th. We sat down with RADM Frank Thorp (Ret) who is chairman of the commissioning committee to see what is in store for Annapolis.   Things I learned from this episode...

• This ship is fast--50 MPH and it is 300+ feet long!
• Tickets to witness the commissioning ceremony are free but you need them and they are almost sold out. I just got mine!
• There are free tours of the ship throughout the week.
• They will not let me drive it.
• Annapolis businesses are rolling out the red carpet for the crew and we should too.
• I have a mental block on Bread and Butter Kitchen--I always call it "Cafe"...Monica will need to change the name, but DO go there and eat!!

Today we sat down with Steuart Pittman who is running for County Executive for Anne Arundel County. He was candid about why he feels he is the best choice for Anne Arundel and how he will accomplish it as the County Executive. Pittman is a farmer and a businessman whose family has lived in Anne Arundel County for 8 generations.

People ask us all the time about where we record.  Sometimes it is at a guest's home or office, sometimes at our homes, sometimes out at a bar, but most of the time it is at The Commons!

While we do not need an office, there are many times when recoding at home is not practical. The Commons answered that call. Yes we know there is an election year going on. Yes we know that Wes Adams and Anne Colt Leitess are both vying for the office. But we were curious--just what does a State's Attorney do? It's a race that many may not completely understand and in that vein, we decided to ask Adams exactly what it is that his office does. The only ground rule we had was no politicking!  Taking a cue from Reddit, we had him explain like I was five (ELI5)..which is not too far of a stretch!
