Marshall McLuhan interviewed by Patrick Peyton in 1972.  Speaker:  Servant of God Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C.

Patrick Peyton (help·info) (January 9, 1909 – June 3, 1992), also known as The Rosary Priest, was an Irish Roman Catholic priest and promoter of the Rosary.  Peyton is the founder of the post-World War II prayer movement called, "Family Rosary Crusade". This campaign was harnessed by the CIA between 1958 and 1965 and was funded in order to combat leftist influence in Latin America, during the Cold War. Father Peyton staged massive Rosary rallies in key cities of the world and extensively utilized mass communication, helped by world-recognized celebrities of Hollywood at that time, promoting his ministry of binding families through prayer under the Family Rosary. Peyton was a popular and charismatic figure in Latin America and the Philippines, where he promoted the Rosary and was known for his strong Irish accent.  Peyton once said that "The family that prays together stays together" and "A world at prayer is a world at peace".

If we want to understand our tools, theories, discursive life, or even consciousness itself, then we have to understand media... because as McLuhan argues, the medium IS the message. What characterizes us now in the age of the internet? The internet and the plurality of new media has added dimensions to the human condition. We are joined for Marshal McLuhan's birthday by his grandson, Andrew McLuhan. Andrew is putting his father and his frandfather's legacy into practice through the McLuhan institute. I look forward to talking about how technology shapes our understanding, and beginning the long journey of thinking with the McLuhans as we move forward into increasingly complex times.

Andrew McLuhan is a Media Educator and Associate Editor of the Winnipeg School of Communication’s journal, Winnsox. He is a husband, father, poet, writer, teacher, craftsman, and explorer. Involved with McLuhan Studies for over a decade, Andrew was responsible for the inventory and evaluation of Marshall McLuhan’s “working library” and presents on the subject widely. Tom Wolfe suggests that a hidden influence on McLuhan's work is the Catholic philosopher Teilhard de Chardin whose ideas anticipated those of McLuhan, especially the evolution of the human mind into the "noosphere". Wolfe theorizes that McLuhan may have thought that association of his ideas with those of a Catholic theologian, albeit one suppressed by Rome, might have denied him the intellectual audience he wanted to reach and so omitted all reference of de Chardin from his published work, while privately acknowledging his influence.
