    Thoughts from your host…

Nineteen-for-Twenty-Four; how’d your Oscar ballot turn out?

Part of me would love to post pics and gifs of what went down at last night’s ceremony, but all the same, I feel like Oscars is all we’ve talked about for two months now. If I’m a betting man, y’all also have at least two weeks of think pieces to look forward to on what Oscar got wrong by choosing BIRDMAN. So if it’s all the same, I’m going to press forward.

I decided to call an old friend this week and it was just like old times. Even though the film up for discussion might not have been as meaty as some of the ones we’ve talked about in the past, it was still a subject that brought up some interesting points of discussion – especially when seen through English eyes.

So while you get into your working week, while you close the book on 2014 at the movies once and for all, and while you sift through angry rants about how Linklater was robbed, throw on the headphones and enjoy a reunion of The Film Locker team

    Thoughts from your host…

Are you the sort of listener who cares more about the tone of a speaker’s voice than what it is they are speaking about, then lordy do I ever have a great episode for you!

You see this week brought upon another episode recorded on a Sunday morning. Turns out this particular Sunday morning followed a particularly boisterous Saturday night for my guest. So her dulcet tones – which I certainly believe sound better than my own on any given day – have an extra bit of smokiness to them that makes for a pretty darned good audio.

I’d love to tell you that we were putting those dulcet tones towards a discussion of your favorite film, but we’re talking about JUPITER ASCENDING…so call it a hunch.

Regardless of the quality of the film (one we still find good things to say about), I’m one who believes that some people could just read the phone book and turn in a good episode.

    6. THE OTHER SIDE pt II – Ryan spins AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS (1:12;52)

    Thoughts from your host…

So much afoot that it’s hard to believe it’s only been one week since the last episode.

For starters, as I mentioned in the intro, you can now find The Matineecast on Pocketcast if that’s an app you use to source your audio goodness (sure seems cool from what I’ve seen of it). I actually need to give a word of thanks to the fine folks at Pocketcast who made getting the show listed amazingly easy, and likewise to dear friend and loyal listener Sam McCosh for planting the seed of the idea.

If you’re a Pocketcast user, The Matineecast can be found here.

Then there’s the feed for the show itself, which has had its own issues for a few weeks unbeknownst to me. Besides not even realizing it until I tried to point someone towards an old episode, my attempt at fixing it was a quick study in the difference between horses and zebras. Long story short, if you’ve noticed a problem trying to play old episodes, the problem has now been fixed.

Finally there’s the placement of this episode in relationship to my review of the film up for discussing – which is way, way ahead of schedule. In the past, I have recorded episodes the day I write the review of them…sometimes even a day or two ahead. In this instance, Bob and I hashed out our thoughts on J.C. Chandor’s new film a whole week before word one of my review has been typed. I say this because my thoughts may come across a bit more scattered than usual, and I say this because my thoughts may change by the time my review drops on Friday.

    Like I said – so much afoot…

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-thirty.

    Thoughts from your host…

First things first – throughout this episode, you will hear us make mention to a project my guest is undertaking. Sometimes we even say things like “that will have to wait until next year”. It only occurred to me after the fact that we never entirely spelled-out what Marya is up to. So allow me to correct that:

As detailed here, Marya is dedicating 2015 to being a year where she only watches movies made by female filmmakers. This is a wonderful idea for all sorts of reasons, and if it means she needs to put off seeing STAR WARS and AVENGERS for a little while, so be it – there are films that require our support far more, and odds are that Marya will point us towards them by the time the ball drops.

This year’s Oscar nominees were met with a great deal of grumpiness, but leave it to Miss Gates to still find a way to spark a spirited discussion out of them! Between this show, and her recent spot appearance on the podcast to discuss GONE GIRL, I’m seriously left to wonder why I don’t have her on the show more often.

Speaking of that discussion, once or twice, you’ll hear me mention Marya’s appearance on the GONE GIRL episode. That show, and the passionate discussion it contained, can be found here if you’re curious.

So get comfy (this episode is long), but we don’t waste a single second.

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-twenty-eight.

  • Episode 128 – INHERENT VICE

    Runtime

    65 minutes

    Up for Discussion

    1. Introduction

    2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY– Q& A with this week’s guest, Courtney Small (2:23)
    3. THE NEW SLANG – Review and reaction to INHERENT VICE (16:31)
    4. THE OTHER SIDES – Courtney spins A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES, Ryan spins THE LONG GOODBYE (46:13)

    Thoughts from your host…

Yesterday, I wrote about my many appearances in 2014 on The Dew Over. One of the things I love about Jamie Dew’s format is that way it allows me to hash out my thoughts on film with a certain familiar faces episode-in and episode-out. Take that in comparison to my show – where despite being a great friend and an awesome guest, I manage to let two whole years go by before getting Courtney back on the show.

There’s all sorts of new ideas and new directions that come with every new year. I can’t help but wonder – might 2015 be the year where I finally start getting returning guests on with a higher degree of frequency?

Who knows, maybe I’ll even follow Mr. Dew’s lead and start gathering a panel!

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-twenty-eight.
