    Thoughts from your host…

What better way to celebrate a clever film by a funny woman who likes a drink, than talking about it with two clever, funny women over drinks? I can’t think of too many better ways to spend a Saturday afternoon! Ordinarily, I’d get my friends over to record in a more studio-like atmosphere, but it’s rare that these two guests and I gather so I felt like celebrating with a table for three. There’s a bit more ambient noise in this episode than usual, but never enough to be too distracting.

Y’know, the thing about bringing in different guests every episode is that I never know what I’m going to get…no matter how recently or how long ago I first met my guests (and I first met today’s guests a long time ago). So where I thought the discussion about the film of the hour would be largely contained to what happened on-screen, instead what I got was a great deal of insight into the lives of two of the best female friends a guy could ask for.

Like I said – one heck of a Saturday afternoon.

    Further Down the Spiral Suggestions:

From Kelly… “The Between Boyfriends Book” by Cindy Chupack

From Erin… Episodes Broad City and Girls

From Ryan… Stage shows like “Baggage” and “Meet Cute”

    Thoughts from your host…

Every week or so, my wife Lindsay and I see a movie. Every week or so, we get into a lengthy discussion about what we’ve just seen on the subway ride home. Consider this episode a seat across from us on that subway ride home. For some time now, Lindsay has only shown up on episodes where we vehemently disagree, so a discussion where we see eye-to-eye might seem like a change of pace.

So allow us to finally turn the conversation towards the world of nonfiction film, and express our deep love of music…along with getting in some therapy about our relationships with our parents.

    Further Down the Spiral Suggestions:

From Lindsay… Lena Hall on YouTube (embedded below, followed by the “Back in Black” clip mentioned in the show)

From Ryan… “Grace” by Jeff Buckley

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-forty-one.

    Thoughts from your host…

Yeah, so remember last episode, when I mentioned my growing love for discussing indie films? Well, it seems like every indie lover needs to go mainstream once in a while. Maybe it’s because even a candy-coloured Pixar offering can serve up a lot to be discussed with a guest as insightful as my companion today. Or maybe it’s because when any film – big or small – brings you to tears, it deserves a conversation.

And you know the way etiquette suggests you bring something for the host when you drop by for dinner or a party? Well my guest today did just that in a podcasting sort of way. I couldn’t wait to share his little gift with you fine folks, so I’ve decided to unleash it in lieu of The White Stripes this time around.

Oh, and before I forget – as mentioned in today’s episode, here’s a link to my appearance on Jim’s show from a few years back when we discussed the films of Michel Gondry on The Director’s Club.

    Further Down the Spiral Suggestions:

From Jim… “Why We Love” by Helen E. Fisher

From Ryan… The television shows of your youth

    Thoughts from your host…

So a lot of y’all went to see JURASSIC WORLD this weekend, huh? Certainly didn’t see that coming.

It’s weird – I know full well that I could get more people interested in tuning-in by covering films like JURASSIC WORLD (or THE AVENGERS, or PITCH PERFECT), but as meagre as my help may be, I’d much rather be a voice of encouragement for films like GIRLHOOD, or A MOST VIOLENT YEAR, or today’s selection.

Even if I wasn’t more interested in discussing the smaller films, I can’t see what good it would be to be the 1200th person discussing those bigger releases. So even though I’d wager that most of you haven’t seen SLOW WEST yet – and some of you might not have even heard of it – I’m hopeful that our discussion today might prompt you to check it out. Maybe you’ll want to eschew a few explosions this summer, and say “no thanks” to a few of the cheeseburgers.

So get comfy and join me and one of my favorite guests as we talk about a handsome film with a handsome star.

    Further Down the Spiral Suggestions:

From Ariel… “Daybreakers” by Louis L’Amour

From Ryan… The music of The Beta Band

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-thirty-nine.

    Thoughts from your host…

Greetings from San Francisco Bay, and welcome back to The Matinee!

The last week has treated me well vacation-wise, both the trip and the time away from my laptop. Now though, I’m ready to get back up and at ’em. To that end, I have a lot of content rattling around in my brain after a week away, so I do hope you’ll come back often as the week goes along.

Today though, it’s time for a tradition. In case you’re new to these parts, I decided back in 2013 to stop dedicating my birthday show to a weaker film. After griping about films like GET HIM TO THE GREEK and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4 in early episodes, it became clear to me that the last weekend in May would forever be a dead zone in the film release calendar. Call me crazy, but this summer doesn’t seem much different.

So, every June we pause the new release love to discuss an old favorite. This year, not only is the film selected very much a favorite…but the guest makes the proceedings feel that much more special. You see, it was her birthday just four days ago, and besides that, she happens to be the co-host of two podcasts I love tuning into.

So while I look to add new goodies to my bookshelf and record cabinet, and close out the day with a stop at my nineteenth and twentieth baseball stadiums, do give a listen to our discussion of film, love, laughter, and The Great American Pastime.

So this is what thirty-seven feels like…

    Further Down the Spiral Suggestions:

From Alia… “Mermaid Avenue” album by Billy Bragg and Wilco

From Ryan… The music of Otis Redding, specifically the ‘Live from Norway’ version of “Try a Little Tenderness”

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-thirty-eight.
