    Thoughts from your host…

It’s a holiday up here in The Great White North, and I dare say that it’s a well-timed one. After all, as I type these thoughts, I do so with echoes of both Mad Men and Game of Thrones rattling around in my head. No spoilers!

As for the matter at-hand, I do want to thank the few of you who gave feedback on the new “Further Down the Spiral” section of the show. I wasn’t dead-certain that it would work, since so often the show digresses into other ideas anyway, but I feel as though with so many of my guests being interested in so many other things, that it’s a way we can enjoy a sweet digression. Like a spoonful of dessert at the end of a good meal.

Which brings us to today and our discussion of a whole quadrilogy.

While this is very much a “summer of sequels”, there is no other franchise I feel like giving this much attention to. But given the place Mad Max holds in pop culture history…and the reaction this latest film sparked…it seemed like a moment worth documenting. When time came to invite on a guest, I knew that only an old friend of the show would do.

    Further Down the Spiral Suggestions:

From Tim… “Low” comic books by Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini

From Ryan… photography by Galen Rowell

    Thoughts from your host…

Wanna hear something funny? In the past, my podcasts dedicated to Hot Docs have been very much mapped out, and overall very specific. This year, I thought I’d keep it a bit more informal and by the seat of my pants. The result? Nada, zip, zilch. No audio dispatches from Hot Docs 2015.

So for starters, lesson-learned when it comes to podcasts from Hot Docs next year, and apologies for the unexpected lapse in programming.

But we’re back, and ready for a busy summer. We get it going with a film I was looking most forward to, and use it to initiate a whole new feature on the show! As if that isn’t enough reason to plug the mic back in, I found myself raising a glass with a very good friend on to the show.

Welcome back to wherever you are…

    Further Down the Spiral Suggestions:

From Corey… music by Sneaker Pimps, Portishead, Tricky, Baby Fox, Hooverphonic, Massive Attack, Morcheeba, Mono, Goldfrapp, UNKLE, Cibo Matto. Black Mirror season 2 – episode 1. Asahi Beerbot.

From Ryan… “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley, “The Beach” by Alex Garland, “The Circle” by Dave Eggers

    Thoughts from your host…

    Dearly Beloved –

We gather here today to pay respects to the podcast segment “Come Talk to Me”. It was born in the spring of 2010, and passed away peacefully in the spring of 2015. It is survived by its host, Ryan Michael McNeil

Jokes aside, as much as I loved reading notes, tweets, and comments from you fine folks on-air, the truth of the matter was that the feedback was dwindling, and my audience is too small to support such a feature. The big shows might get comments in the dozens or hundreds – I usually get a handful, and even at that it usually requires several prompts on social media. So while I’m always around to interact with my meagre listenership, I’m going to leave that off air for the foreseeable future.

In the meantime, we have a very cheerful and intelligent guest lined up for this new episode. Considering that I’ve only been following her work for a few months, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. So when the tape started rolling and I could hear that she was bringing the goods, I considered myself one lucky host!

There’s been a lot of great discussion happening on the show in 2015…both for bad films and good. The way this charming lass was able to keep the trend going really did make my day!

That and Daredevil, lots of Daredevil…

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-thirty-five.

    2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY– Q& A with this week’s guest, Sean Walsh (3:21)
    3. THE NEW SLANG – Review and reaction to ’71 (19:37)
    4. THE OTHER SIDE pt I – Sean spins THE THING (46:29)
    5. THE OTHER SIDE pt II – Ryan spins CHILDREN OF MEN (58:56)

    Thoughts from your host…

Funny thing about doing this show: One episode I can be sitting down with someone I’ve never met face-to-face before, the next episode I can be sitting down with someone I’ve known longer than anyone that isn’t a blood relative. The even funnier bit? I feel like both episodes deliver the goods conversationally.

Like last time, the film up for discussion is topical. Like last time, my guest has a vested interest. Like last time, we managed to find a gold nugget in muddy river waters of the winter multiplex. And like last time, we find our minds drifting to things outside the edges of the screen.

So allow me to give you a glimmer into what my lunch breaks have been like for the last several months.

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-thirty-four.

    Thoughts from your host…

Two weeks ago, I really did believe that I was going to sit down this weekend and talk about Neil Blomkamp’s CHAPPIE for a podcast episode. But then something funny happened on the way to the studio…the film got so much bad word of mouth. Now, I fully realize that I shouldn’t pay attention to such things and be prepared to make my own mind up…but the thing is, I just didn’t want to dice it.

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to turn people’s attention to something beautiful, and been just as long since I’ve been able to have a weighty conversation on this show that went beyond the fluffiness of a winter cinematic trifle.

    So, plans changed.

Instead of wondering about the failed promise of a sci-fi director my guest and I use that precious time and energy discussing a film that speaks volumes about the world we live in…and a film I dearly hope more people get a chance to track down.

Films like CHAPPIE will come and go – much as I may well find myself enjoying it – but films like the one up for discussion today are much more worthy of our conversations.

Speaking of that conversation, I’m deeply thankful that my charming and clever guest for this episode was kind enough to drop by my place to record on such short notice.

That’s the thing about doing a show that lives and dies on the backs of the guests; you really do find yourself depending on the kindness of strangers.

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-thirty-three.
