    Thoughts from your host…

Once in a while you just want to talk about it all…and if a new Star Wars film isn’t that “once in a while”, well, I don’t know what is. So with that said, welcome to the longest single-guest Matineecast yet.

Interestingly, were this an episode of my guest’s podcast, it would actually be considered an EP. Maybe he had an effect on me.

As you might have noticed in the chapter list above, we do something a little different this time around (which also contributes to this episode’s length). Because we believe this movie gave us so much to unpack, we have dedicated an entire act to a spoiler-filled section of the conversation. Part of the reason for this is because I believe that what qualifies as “spoilers” in this movie is a little ridiculous, and likewise because I believe the details that truly are spoiler-ific are details that merit discussion. Long discussion. Hell, in many ways they are the details that warrant the MOST discussion.

To keep them under lock-and-key for the foreseeable future is absurd; especially considering how many people paid to watch this movie over the last four days.

So if you haven’t seen it yet and want to listen to discussion in broad strokes – we have you covered. If you want to listen to us discuss everything up until the movie cuts to black – we have that for you too.

Get comfy…get very comfy. This will take a few minutes.

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-forty-nine.

    Thoughts from your host…

We’ve reached a little bit of a gap in the schedule where film release dates are concerned. A bit of a breather in between the blockbusters of American Thanksgiving and the arty and intellectual offerings that arrive at year-end. It’s too late to discuss something like CREED, and too early to discuss something like CAROL. As such, we find ourselves looking around for a topic of conversation, and for the first time in this show’s history – we look to Netflix.

As my guest brings up, this gives me a bit of a dose of bitter medicine. I have become so spoiled in being able to find anything I want to watch in a theatrical environment. I live in Movie going Xanadu where not only does every new release get the big screen treatment, but so too do many of the classics.

So looking to an on-demand service to ferry us from fall to winter feels strange, but also gives me a clear understanding of how so many movies are consumed.

Can’t say I was a huge fan of the experience, but that will come up on the show.

    Thoughts from your host…

There have been many times in my life as a cinephile where I have taken great pride in arguing the in’s and out’s of a particular film with a worthy opponent. Many a time, the knives have been drawn and the gauntlets thrown for an evening of antagonism and animosity.

There have been just as many times where I want to find a like-minded friend and delight in a particularly worthy offering. To consume many drinks and go over something bit-by-bit in a “Did you see that???” fashion.

Today is one of those days. Time for me to gather with an old friend and bask in the glow of an awesome piece of cinema. Hope y’all don’t mind us waxing on for an hour or so.

    Thoughts from your host…

Even though this show adheres to a pretty rigorous format, there’s a lot of latitude for things to change from show to show.

Sometimes, we’ll find ourselves getting deep into the technical nuts and bolts of a piece of filmmaking…breaking it all the way down to its chemical components in discussing what does and doesn’t make it work. Other times, we find ourselves digressing quite a bit and bringing the conversation back to ourselves.

This episode is more of the latter.

On this blustery Friday night, my guest and I got into everything from paternal relationships, to earliest memories, to what makes adolescent actors succeed and fail. I’d wager that if you listened to other podcasts do their discussions of this movie, you’d likely hear discussion that focuses a little more on technique…but perhaps not one as personable.

    Like I said: latitude.

Also, I mention as much in the introduction of the film up for review, but Hillary and I get into a detail that happens halfway through the film that some might consider a spoiler. So while this show generally stays spoiler-free, consider yourself warned for this episode.

Finally – a glimpse at the silent auditor of this episode:

A different sort of #Matineecast guest than I’m accustomed to. Thanks for being so well behaved Lola! #dogsofinstagram

    Thoughts from your host…

There was just no damned way I could let this date pass without marking it on-mic.

The film that gives this date its infamy is such a huge part of my filmgoing past (as I’ll explain on the show). It’s a date that has a certain lore in the pop culture sensibilities of an entire generation. Plus, if nothing else, it finally gave me an excuse to talk about one of the best film trilogies of all-time.

Of course, such a momentous occasion couldn’t come down to just one guest. We wouldn’t nearly be able to do the topic justice. So instead, I put out the call to some longtime friends of the show and a quorum was assembled to talk all things Zemeckis, DeLorean, Hill Valley, ’55, ’85, ’15, Stoltz, Fox, Shue, and Brown.

So pour yourself a Pepsi Free and pop in your Van Halen cassettes…”the future” has finally arrived.
