Thoughts from your host…
Welcome back to wherever you are. These little breaks that I take with the show are becoming a lot longer and a lot more frequent…but what can I say, sometimes one needs a bit of time to properly soak-up a film festival and then return talking about something new.
If you’ve stuck with me, I’m deeply grateful.
When I look back on this episode, I can’t help but wish I’d kept the subject matter in my hip pocket until my inevitable trip to Los Angeles, since the episode became so California-centric.
At the very least, perhaps its apropos that we’re talking about films set somewhere so sunny on a weekend where summer finally arrived in my hometown.
Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-fifty-eight.

Thoughts from your host…
As much fun as I think it would be to talk about talking jungle creatures or the secret origins of The Evil Queen, neither one of them really felt like a great use of my last full podcast episode before Hot Docs coverage begins later this week. Instead, I thought this might be a good time to take stock of the project many of us are working on.
Thanks to the marvellous people over at womeninfilm.org, many of us have been spending 2016 soaking up 52 Films by Women.
Some of us are struggling with it, some are revelling, some are something in-between. All of it is worth discussing, so that’s what we’re doing this week
So please enjoy this break from the usual structure. Please consider looking into some of the titles and artists we bring up throughout the course of the next 75 minutes. And please enjoy all of the Prince I have dropped into the show for your listening pleasure.
Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-fifty-seven.

The great thing about working with a fellow film-lover is being able to engage in weighty film discussion during the middle of a workday.
Take a seat and enjoy eavesdropping on a typical office chat between myself an my guest!

Matt Zoeller Seitz’s video essay on SUPERMAN RETURNS (continued here).
I have no idea what I originally planned on talking about this week (CHI-RAQ, or THE LITTLE PRINCE perhaps?). Suffice it to say, it wasn’t going to be a discussion about a major comic book franchise…not even one I was stoked to see.
(Yes, I’m the one. Nice to meet you).
For the most part, I try to keep the franchise talk low on this meagre podcast for the pure and simple fact that there’s not much to be gleaned from one more discussion about whether Marvel is better than DC, or whether they all need to go away. Likewise, if one more person happens to check out a film like OBVIOUS CHILD, BEFORE MIDNIGHT, or AMY on my recommendation, well then so much the better
But then…well, there was alcohol, and Bob Turnbull, and an argument…and, well, here we are. I explain more on-air, but for now, please join us for a beverage mere moments after the film ended and [spoilerspoilerspoilerspoiler]

0:00 Introduction with guest JESS ROGERS
Thoughts from your host…
March is shaping up to be the month that the podcast resets itself. I hadn’t anticipated getting ten weeks into the new year and only having two review episodes to show for it, but a perfect storm of cinematic slim pickens, life obstacles, and conflicting schedules brought us to this point. I’d like to say it couldn’t be helped, but I know that just a bit more determination could have found sitting a bit prettier at this early stage of 2016.
Alas…
But it’s all good. Like the proverbial Stella, I have got my groove back.
We begin by getting our feet wet today with a more subdued and dialed-down episode. It’s one dedicated to a film I believe is worth checking out, but one that will be shuffled away in short order in order to make way for teenagers fighting through dystopia and superheroes fighting each-other. So before it leaves, allow us a moment to give it some thought.
For that, we bring on an old friend. We don’t subject her to do a lot of homework or answer a lot of questions. Instead, we just have her sit down on the balcony and shoot the shit. It brings about some wonderful results, and even leads me to believe it’s the sort of show I should post more often.
So here’s to fresh momentum, good films, and great friends.
Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-fifty-four.
