The snowman Cineplex ad that makes P cry every time.
Thoughts from your host…
In case you missed it, just last week I wandered on down a mere few blocks from my office and sat in on a nifty podcast that records from a cool little studio set-up in a local bar. To say I had fun recording with Jai and Petula would be putting it mildly. What better use of a Tuesday night is there than discussing what makes a great chili and why there are only three films that can realistically win Best Picture?
To complete the circle, P dropped by my show this week…and I think the results actually speak for themselves!
Once again, we’re cranking out an episode on short-rest. This means that The Other Side is a bit more haphazard than it usually is. However, I sorta like the loose discussion that it fosters. It’s not really my first choice, but I do believe that for future episodes where my guest and I need to record, watch, and post all in one weekend, this might be the format we run with.
Plenty to get to today, including strangers having gender confusion around Petula, sexually-charged nuns, and how I want to die.
Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-fifty-three.

Thoughts from your host…
I mention as much during the show, but it’s a little nuts for me to realize that in over six years of podcasting and more than one hundred fifty episodes that certain artists haven’t been covered in terms of their new releases.
Michael Mann, for instance…or Guillermo del Toro…Spike Jonze…and (yes) The Coen Brothers. So in some ways Episode 152 is about restitution.
With The Coens on-deck, there are few more passionate guests I could have brought by than the man who shared a table for me on this episode.
Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-fifty-two.

1. Introduction
Thoughts from your host…
Strangest thing: Usually, this mid-January conversation I have with my Californian friend feels like the conclusion of something. Since I tend not to get too caught up in wondering or worrying over who gets the Oscar handed to them, it’s the journey to nomination morning that fascinates me more.
Some films begin their walk around now at Sundance. Others start their journey in May during Cannes. Still more arrive at Telluride and TIFF in the autumn. (All festivals are represented this year). So when Maya and I turn on our microphones in January, the stocks on these films and stars have risen and fallen, the narrative surrounding them calcified, and the statues all but won.
This year though, aside from one certainty surrounding The King of The World, nobody knows anything So if Marya and I sound a bit more perplexed than usual…well…that’s why.
In addition, Marya’s Year of Women is very much at the forefront of this conversation. So even though we have gathered for this little tete-a-tete for five years running, this one feels a bit more unique than usual.
Get comfy (again this year, the episode is long), but we don’t waste a single second.
Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-fifty-one.

Thoughts from your host…
It comes up at one point during the show, but when I look back on 2015 I don’t exactly see “a great year”. In my estimation “a great year” involves several future masterpieces…a cluster of home runs, if you will. Now while I don’t believe that 2015 had many of those, I do believe that there were an awful lot of triples, and doubles to the corner. Selections I believed to be really good…if not quite “great”.
Still, I would happily take a year like 2015 with all of its wonderful offerings and cinematic nourishment. Heck, when you get four of us around a table to talk about our top films and we pick sixteen different titles for twenty slots, you know there was a lot to cheer from.
So pour a glass of champagne and grab yourself a noisemaker…it’s time for a family affair.
As usual, if you’re curious about the songs used as bed music, the track list can be found above in the show notes.
As mentioned within the introduction, if you find the bed music distracting, a music-free version of this episode can be found here.
Thanks for tuning in to episode one-hundred-and-fifty, and all the best for the new year…
