Thoughts from your host…
This summer has been a bit of a blur, dear listeners.
One second I was caught-up in the mayhem of Hot Docs and Raptors playoffs, the next minute I looked up and TIFF was right around the corner. Where did the time go? What’s more, where did my movies go?? Was the good summer stuff off in some unexplored multiplex that I don’t know about? Did it spring from a film festival in a far-flung corner of the world and not yet make its way to North America?
This summer has been haphazard, busy, curious, and joyful…all qualities I believe make their way into this episode of the show.
It’s a bit more rustic than usual, a bit more immediate. We dispel with some of the usual segments (Namely, “The Other Side”) and get a bit more broad in our discussion of the film. At the end of it all, what you get is a lot like pulling up a chair on the patio of a bar that happens to be across the street from the theatre…
…which isn’t far off from the way this episode shook down.

Thoughts from your host…
Back in the late winter, I was lucky enough two badass women from two badass podcasts on back-to-back episodes of this show. In both cases, the episodes were somewhat short-notice, and these women were kind enough to help a brother out. So, in both cases, I made sure to repay them by giving them their pick of the litter where future episodes were concerned.
It just so happened, they picked back-to-back episodes. Fitting.
So, once again, I am a lucky podcaster to have such great friends, and a lucky man to have such incredible women to listen to in the hopes of getting better perspective on the world, our lives, and of course, the joy that is filmgoing.
One more technical note about today’s show – as I mention this in this episode’s introduction, I’ve used different software to cut together the last two episodes. This time, it’s an episode recorded in-house, meaning the result might be different from last week. So, again, if things sound a little better or worse, I would certainly like to know.
Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-sixty-two.

Thoughts from your host…
Just one episode ago, I griped in the show notes about how there had been so little at the movies to talk about this summer. Two weeks later, and I suddenly seem to be drowning in options.
One sorta wishes the studios would space these things out a bit better, but here we are.
Not only is there so very much to talk about with the many movies we suddenly find ourselves surrounded with, but there is so very much to talk about with this one movie. So, on message alone, this was an episode destined to run a little long…what with legacy to discuss, and feminism, and…y’know…whether or not the movie is any good. Looking beyond those points of discussion, today I get to rap with one of my favorite guests and bestest friends.
So again – a little long.
One little technical note about today’s show – I’m used different software to cut together today’s episode so if things sound a little better or worse, I would certainly like to know.

The bad news is that an entire month went by without any films jumping out at me as something that warranted conversation. There’s a bit of that that’s on me since I could have looked a little harder, but by and large I’m hanging that one on the studios for this slog of a summer they have made us endure.
I mean, really…what’s a guy gotta do for an OBVIOUS CHILD right around now…or a BEFORE MIDNIGHT?
However, into this abyss, we eventually discover a film so polarizing, so abstract, that we could have dedicated two whole episodes to it and still not tick off all the boxes. While my feelings on it are deeply mixed, I have to appreciate it for at the very least giving me something to talk about in these badlands of filmgoing we currently find ourselves wandering.
A quick technical note; with this episode being recorded during a truly beautiful long weekend, I couldn’t resist the urge to once again sit outside. However, the afternoon got a little breezier than I realized. So while I must apologize for the wind whistling past the microphone on more than one occasion in this episode, I don’t think the end result is inaudible…
…but I’ve been wrong before.
Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-sixty.

Thoughts from your host…
As the calendar turns to June, I try to surround myself with tokens of joy. I get outside more often, see people I care about. In recent years I have even gotten out-of-town and done some exploring. Basically, I try to mark turning another year older with as much positive energy as possible.
However, once upon a time “positive energy” was disrupted by discussion of such soul-sucking offerings as GET HIM TO THE GREEK and the fourth PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN film. So time came to turn eyes towards the all time favorites of your humble host…
…and this year we have finally arrived at the all-timiest of them all.
When I reached out to today’s guest, I had visions of enthusiasm and energy, and I’m pretty pleased to see my visions come true.
So pull up a chair, step out on to my balcony, and listen in on a transatlantic discussion of Cameron Crowe’s opus.
