Last November, when I was looking for feedback on the podcast, someone came to me with an idea that was too good to pass up.
As you might know by now, I have a lot of movie-loving friends here in the city, and our geeky conversations can be endless. Thus the suggestion was to take the show out of the friendly confines of Casa del Hatter and record some of these conversations as they happen. Tables of three or four, with an emphasis not so much on reviews or one specific film…but on news and trends related to movies and moviegoing.
Thus, “In Between Days” was born.
Expect to see these episodes turning up once a month. My intention is for them to be a bit more raw (there are almost no cuts in this conversation), a bit shorter, with no rules, and less of a pecking order on who sits down at the table.
For this first episode, I was joined by the mastermind behind this offshoot or my podcast, Matthew Price of MaMo, and James McNally of Toronto Screen Shots. Yesterday morning, we gathered to discuss a topic that I wrote about last week – the downward trend of moviegoing audiences.
Enjoy!
Holy hell – fifty shows! Feels like just yesterday I was recording episode six for my seven devoted listeners. Thanks to everyone who has tuned in over fifty episodes, and likewise to anyone who’s tuning in for the first time.
This episode’s guest deserves a special bit of thanks. Not only did he step in very late to save me from some unfortunate technical difficulties, but he brought some amazing gift of gab along with him! My humble show is not worthy of such intelligent discourse!
Apologies in advance, this episode runs a bit longer than most. One reason for that will become pretty clear when you listen in, and the other is because with both Jake and I being Spielberg fans, we got a little carried away with the top five (chapter five could probably be an episode all its own).

Much like last year’s wrap-up show, it feels like this episode has been in the works for a long time. And also like last year, the wait was worth every second. There’s a technical hiccup or two along the way, but such things happen when you’re on a transatlantic call. I should also mention that I think it’s fitting that my final guests of 2011 are Brits, since I’m hoping to reach out to a few more international guests in the coming year.
As is to be expected, this episode is lengthy – matter of fact it’s the longest Matineecast episode ever! It beat the old mark by a mere forty-two seconds, and appropriately enough the old mark was held by the “2010 in review” episode. Guess I got those chapter stops figured out right in the nick of time, eh?
Once again I bring you an episode that is far more collaborative than most, and I want to thank everybody who helped me bring it together. I couldn’t be happier with the results, and it’s a fitting send-off for a year where going to the movies introduced me to so many wonderful people – both around the world and here at home .By the way – For my favorite part of the episode, go straight to chapter seven, or the sixty minute mark.
Finally, if you’re curious about the songs used as bed music, the track list can be found below in the show notes. Many thanks to Shane for helping point me towards additional songs.

So something strange happened on the way to posting the yuletide laced episode forty-eight. Ordinarily I give the entire recording a touch of post-production to clean up the sound and rhythm of the conversation. But for a few reasons, I have decided to leave the conversation in this episode largely untouched. There are a few cuts to be sure (mostly thanks to my neighbour who happened to be doing renovations during the show’s opening fifteen minutes), but by and large what you’re hearing is a live mic.
Thus there’s one or two more “Um’s” and “Y’know’s” than you’re used to hearing, but given that I’ve known this episode’s guest for a few years, I figured the energy would more than make up for the unpolished nature.

THE MATINEECAST HAS MOVED!!
As I mentioned last week, I’ve had to switch the feed for the podcast after my old server closed up shop. The bad news is that I wasn’t able to do it in time to simply redirect the old feed and continue on uninterrupted. The good news is that with the move, I’ve been able to start offering better audio quality including embedding chapter stops and episode artwork. One further bit of bad news is that reloading all of the old episodes with all the trimmings will take time, so only the most recent twelve episodes are availible at the moment.
So, if you haven’t already, please reset you iTunes subscription to this feed to make sure you don’t miss a thing.
To the matter at hand, I am quite excited with this week’s episode. After far too much of the year spent talking to people on my own continent (often within my own city) I was able to pull out my passport and take the show across a wire to Ukraine! Lesya was kind enough to drop by to discuss Lars Von Trier, and while you might be able to pick up on a little of her nerves, I was quite taken with her and passion grace.

A bit of a programming note before I get to episode forty-six: The Matineecast will be switching hosts very shortly. My host for two years now, mypodcast.com, will be closing soon (gotta love a down economy!). I think I’ve got things worked out to the point that subscriptions won’t be interrupted, but my tech skills being what they are – it’s entirely possible that I might miss a step.
So if you get past December 5th and can’t get the new episode, check in here and make sure you’re set to the right feed. In the meantime, here’s another round of the guest getting me liquored up.

I’m always thrilled to turn on the mic for every guest that comes on this show, but I gotta be honest with you folks – anytime a fellow podcaster sits down in the guest seat, the end result is just the little bit better. For the second week in a row I get to reap the benefit, gonna make going back to business as usual next episode a bit of a toughpill to swallow! (No offense intended to my next guest)

I feel I should address something before you tune-in for this week’s episode. A moment that got cut from this episode, and something that came up two episodes prior, is mention of who has and hasn’t been a guest on this show.
To any of my friends, and any past or future guests: Please don’t take offence if you haven’t been on the show (or likewise if you haven’t been back).
Between alternating male and female guests, tossing in a returnee every third show, wanting to vary up the source (not too many in a row via Skype, not too many in a row here at home), hoping to only keep the shows dropping bi-weekly…and considering people’s tastes and how they relate to the films being released, there is a fair amount of OCD that goes into choosing who’s on when for this show.
In short, if you read and listen to my thoughts from this space, you’re very special to me. Yes, I probably already have thought about bringing you on to do a Matineecast…I just haven’t arrived at your turn just yet.

Sorry to break the usual rhythm, but a conversation just had to be had.
As we got home from seeing a film recently, Lindsay looked at me and said “Grab your mic – we’re podcasting”. She doesn’t usually get so gung-ho about being on air, and the last time she was, it made for a pretty funny bit of listening (Episode 18.1 if you’ve never heard it).
This time around, we argue over a 1980’s film that has recently been remade. Take a listen to this spirited discussion in the Dennis Eckersley episode…

Pull up a chair, pass the stuffing and help yourself to some white meat – it’s Thanksgiving Day here in Canada. (And if I do say so – here in Toronto, it could not have been a lovlier weekend to be out and around. I can’t remember the last time so much time was spent on Thanksgiving sitting outside in shirtsleeves).
Behind my trusty microphone, Thanksgiving brings with it an annual tradition of sitting down with a guest and talking about what we’re thankful for. Off the hop, I can tell you that I’m thankful for a guest who was so eager to be on the show, and likewise I’m thankful to have seen such a wonderful film for the feature discussion.
But enough chit-chat…there’s movies to talk about and food to be eaten. So as I brace myself for a third family dinner in as many nights, join us at Casa McNeil for a warm and fuzzy edition of the show. Here’s what’s in store in the Jackie Robinson episode…
