While much of the world remains under lockdown, and many businesses remain closed, I've been taking some time to finally catch up on movies on my watchlist. As a huge fan of Blade Runner - probably my all-time favorite movie - I was nervous but excited to watch Blade Runner 2049. It did, after all, receive widespread acclaim from genre websites despite a poor box office showing. Well, I have lost faith in these websites, which fell over each other to praise this masturbatory insult to the Blade Runner name, which spends nearly three hours on nothing: beautiful shots which then linger and change angles over the course of 20 or so minutes, tepid shots of lead Ryan Gosling not speaking, taking action, or emoting, and a nonsensical plot that is really a series of unconnected and unexplained events. This was more than a bore, more than a disappointment - this is a movie that I couldn't enjoy on any level, and I question the integrity and tastes of those who praised it.
