Better Call Saul is back, with a 2-night premiere event which aired last Sunday and Monday. Tonight, we discuss the first episode, "Magic Man," as Jimmy McGill is completely supplanted by Saul Goodman, and Jimmy's relationships and morals spiral rapidly down the drain. Thriving business and deteriorating happiness is a theme for this episode, and likely for all of season 5. Meanwhile, in the present day, Gene faces new threats and finds the courage for a moment of heroism, or despair - a pattern that Jimmy/Saul/Gene seems destined to repeat, until death - which may be coming soon, as old enemies seem to be closing in!

HQ Trivia, which never paid me my winnings from Stephen King trivia night, abruptly shut down and fired its 25 employees on Valentine's Day, just as they were expecting an acquisition. According to HQ co-founder and CEO Rus Yusupov, announcements of HQ's demise - which, keep in mind, came from him, just 6 days ago - may be premature. He has been tweeting all sorts of optimistic announcements, which makes me wonder - will HQ 2.0, if it comes to pass, rehire its unprofessional, charisma-free hosts who went out in a blaze of drunken glory? For that matter, where are my $16 dollars, Rus? I want some acknowledgment of my accomplishments as a Stephen King Constant Reader!

Stephen King is everywhere, with It: Chapter 2 in theaters, his new novel The Institute on bookshelves and Kindles, and even the difficult-to-find but excellent TV show Mr. Mercedes back on TV. Continuing coverage of this weekend’s massive news dump, let’s turn to the new Marvel Disney Plus projects announced at D23.

Sadly, the video promo for WandaVision has not been released publicly, but it’s been described to me and it sounds amazing. The promo image, which has been released, supports the narrative that we’re looking at the Dick Van Dyke Show as imagined, and quite possibly willed into one reality or another, by Wanda Maximoff. The Scarlet Witch’s actual love interest in the MCU is no longer with us as of Avengers: Infinity War, so this show promises a look at the true extent of Wanda’s powers, as well as her damage, which has been explored to great effect in Marvel comics going back to the ‘80s and was depicted as recently as Tom King’s Vision miniseries.

Three new Marvel shows for Disney Plus were also announced over the weekend, and while I guessed one correctly, the other two are pretty surprising and very exciting.

We’re taking a brief detour from entertainment news and reviews, to discuss some personal life stuff. That’s always been part of my show, and if it was ever called for - wow! So, no disrespect to Robin Williams, laughter is not the best medicine. Especially if it’s terribly unfunny, but honestly anyone who treats patients should disclose if they have a - well, career is a major overstatement, but - if they spend their nights doing open mics specifically about their medical practice! If there is a .000001 percent chance that my health is going to be the subject of some hack’s open mic set, that’s .000001 too many.  

So, since I have a podcast of my own, I discuss this latest goofy life development, and I’m taking referrals because, as a patient, I have made a hasty exit, stage left!

After an unannounced, unscheduled hiatus, the Matt Sager Podcast is back! And just in time to comment on 2 great streaming shows that have premiered in recent weeks: the revived Veronica Mars, whose season 4 is airing on Hulu, and Amazon’s adaptation of The Boys.

Both shows are excellent, Veronica Mars surprising even me with how great it continues to be 15 years after the premiere season 1, while The Boys’ only imperfection has to do with timing, and the current over saturation of stories of this kind. Which does not mean it’s not great - it’s amazing, and if you haven’t watched it, you really should!

Then we get into the strange story of Rob Liefeld and his nasty parting of ways with his early Image Comics super-team, Youngblood. The stranger-than-fiction story involves Andrew Rev, apparently once the mad king of the late indie publisher Comico. Both The Beat and Bleeding Cool dedicated a lot of time and effort into getting Rev’s side of the confusing tale, but neither was able to get anything intelligible enough to print. Liefeld, for his part, is apparently done with this collection of ‘90s cliches and I don’t think it’s anyone’s loss. Mullets, utility belts and shoulder pads do not a franchise make.
