CJ - Chelcie is an Emergency Medicine trainee, interested in health inequalities, particularly those faced by women. Throughout her training she has been a victim of, and witness to, multiple incidences of sexism and misogyny. This prompted her to found the Sexism in Medicine project, which has led to the hard-hitting report published with the BMA in August 2021. She campaigns for equality in the workplace, speaking at national and international conferences, collaborating with multiple organisations in order to tackle this issue. This latest campaign, focuses of giving victims of workplace misogyny a voice, bringing about change through the power of their testimony.

This week Nicky Lambert and Vanessa Gilmartin spoke with guests Georgina Adams and Debbie Frances about Stronger Together: An evaluation of a quality improvement initiative to reduce suicide risk and improve patient safety through carer collaboration.

GA - I am Georgina Adams and I have worked for the last year as a Clinical Lead in the Safe from Suicide team (Suicide prevention) with Devon Partnership Trust . The focus of my work is building and improving family and carer involvement as this is so important for patient safety, carer well being and suicide prevention. In this role I have been lucky enough to have joined the co production team creating Stronger Together training, which is I first met and started working with Debbie. We now co deliver Stronger Together to carers and practitioners. I qualified as a social worker in 1993 and worked in frontline child protection work until I joined DPT in 2020 as the lead social worker at a forensic psychiatric hospital before I joined the Safe from Suicide team. Working with families and carers has always been important to me and is at the heart of my values and ethics.

DF - I am a former parent carer for a young adult with complex mental health issues. As a consequence of my experiences of mental health services over many years, I am passionate about working to improve the quality and safety of services available to those in need of support, and changing the way in which services engage with carers and families. I have a particular interest in suicide prevention, and provide lived experience input into my local NHS mental health trust’s suicide prevention work. This has included the co-design and delivery of the ‘Stronger Together’ training programme, which aims to inform, support and empower carers of those affected by suicidal behaviours. I am Co-Chair of the Trust’s Carer Strategy Implementation Group, and was involved in co-producing their new carer strategy.

I have broad-ranging experience within the mental health and voluntary sectors, most recently as a freelance Mental Health Trainer and Lived Experience Carer Consultant, specialising in carer support, and co-production and collaborative working within mental health services. I am a guest tutor at Exeter and Reading Universities.

In 2018, I was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to research initiatives that prevent the escalation and recurrence of mental illness in young people, leading to me travel to Australia and Finland in 2019 and 2020 respectively. In July 2023, I completed a Masters in Mental Health Recovery & Social Inclusion at the University of Hertfordshire, with Distinction.

LB - Dr Luca Bernardi is a Senior Lecturer in Politics at the Department of Politics at the University of Liverpool. Luca’s research intersects political behaviour and political psychology. More recently, Luca has been studying how mental health problems may influence the way people engage in politics, the effects of political stressors on mental health, and the impact Covid-19 stressors on mental health and political engagement.

Title: A narrative synthesis using the normalisation process theory coding manual for qualitative research as an analytical

framework

Abstract: Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) is frequently used to inform qualitative research that aims to explain and evaluate processes that shape late-stage translation of innovations in the organisation and delivery of healthcare. A coding manual for qualitative researchers using NPT will facilitate transparent data analysis processes and will also reduce the cognitive and practical burden on researchers.

Title: Achieving PARITY: Co-creating an impact measure for service user and carer involvement in pre-registration nurse

education

Abstract: Few impact measures are developed in co-production with service users and carers. This study contributes to addressing that gap. The resulting co-created 21-item impact measure, which was tested for structural validity and internal reliability, shows promise and offers something original to the field by embracing a participatory approach to all stages of the research process. These early test results should be treated with a measure of caution; the methodological limitations of testing at just one university and with a limited age range of students are acknowledged. Future research will be required to strengthen internal consistency and address these limitations, and to establish the stability of the measure, before it can be claimed to meaningfully measure any changes resulting from service user and carer involvement in the curriculum.

Welcome to episode 150 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 31 January 2024] of #mhTV​​​​​​​​. This week Nicky Lambert and Vanessa Gilmartin spoke with guest Dr Sadiq Bhanbhro about what is so-called honour-based abuse, and why is it rising?

SB - Dr Sadiq Bhanbhro is a Senior Research Fellow at Sheffield Hallam University. He is an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural researcher with over 17 years of experience in academia in the UK and abroad. Drawing on his expertise in anthropology, public health, gender studies, and sociology, he has a PhD in the political economy of honour and honour killings of women and girls in the UK and Pakistan. Sadiq's research area is Global Public Health, focusing on health inequalities, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and anti-racism in health and social care research, gender, and violence (particularly honour-based abuse/honour crimes and honour killings). He has conducted several research projects in the UK, Pakistan, Indonesia, and the Philippines and published 20 peer-reviewed research papers in high-quality international journals and four book chapters. Additionally, he has presented his research at more than 35 conferences worldwide. Beyond academia, his influence extends to the public through his insightful contributions to platforms like Conversation UK, The Express Tribune, the Friday Times, and other media outlets.

Title: Quiet students in Nurse Education: what are their experiences of the curriculum?

Welcome to episode 148 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 17 January 2024] of #mhTV​​​​​​​​. This week Nicky Lambert and David Munday spoke with guest Shannon Murray about LGBTQ+ substance use and treatment experiences.

SM - Shannon is a PhD student researching Gay and Bisexual men’s experiences of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in England and Wales. The focus of which is understanding how Gay and Bisexual men experience relationship abuse and their experiences in engaging with support services in Wales.

Alongside her PhD, she works as a research assistant at the University of South Wales' Substance Use Research Group on projects including evaluating a heroin and crack action area, lessons from COVID-19 on substance use services, the impact of minimum alcohol pricing, and substance use among university students.

In line with her interests in LGBTQ+ relationship abuse Shannon received funding to undertake a study that focused on substance use among LGBTQ+ communities.

The research focused on understanding why some LGBTQ+ people use drugs/alcohol and why they are underrepresented in services. A staff toolkit was co-created for substance use services in the UK using participant responses.
