ST: Steve is an experienced values-driven leader. He has 33-years experience as a Registered Nurse (Mental Health) including working at Board level as a Chief Nurse, Operations Director, and Chief Executive in the private, not for profit and public sectors. Steve has held visiting professorships in Mental Health at three UK Universities.

He is qualified executive coach and is just about to return to academia to teach at Keele University, Staffordshire. Steve is a strong supporter of recovery, trauma informed approaches to understand mental health conditions and psychological distress and the need for compassionate leadership to create cultures that support recovery.

SL: Sarah is a Mental health Nurse with extensive experience of working with children and young people, both in an inpatient setting and in the community. She specialises in working with children and young people in care. Sarah’s approach is informed through a wide range of related professional development. She offers individual and dyadic therapeutic input and training and support to the system around the child. Sarah is a fully certified Theraplay Practitioner and Theraplay trainer working in Ireland.

ML: Michaela is a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nurse who is currently working as a CYP Psychiatry Clinical Nurse Specialist at UCLH, having worked in various tier 4 units since 2015. She has a special interest in complex trauma and personality disorders, in addition to young peoples mental health in relation to social media and societal changes.

Born to Irish parents in North West London, Michaela enjoys anything horror or true crime related, illustration and drawing, and spending time with her Frenchie, Willow.

Welcome to episode 133 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 2 August 2023] of #mhTV​​​​​​​​. This week Nicky Lambert and David Munday spoke with guests Samantha Groves & Karen Lascelles about Suicide, self-harm, and suicide ideation in nurses and midwives: A systematic review of prevalence, contributory factors, and interventions.

SG: Samantha Groves is a research assistant working at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust on projects related to suicide and self-harm. This work is conducted in collaboration with the Centre for Suicide Research at The University of Oxford. Samantha joined Oxford Health after completing a Masters in Clinical and Health Psychology, and working as a research assistant at The University of Manchester. Current research conducted by Samantha includes exploration of suicide and self-harm among nurses and midwives or associated students, alongside exploring the experiences of staff working within inpatient mental health services who work with patients who self-harm. Samantha will be beginning a DPhil at The University of Oxford in October 2023 to continue this work.

KL: Karen Lascelles is a mental health nurse consultant at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. Her specialism is suicide prevention, where she works across adult and older adult age groups delivering training, supporting individuals and teams with complex cases involving suicide risk, and conducting research and quality improvement work. Karen also leads Oxford Health’s suicide prevention strategy and is a Professional Doctorate in Nursing student at Oxford Brookes University. Karen’s research includes exploring the experiences and support needs of adults who care for an adult family member or friend they consider to be at risk of suicide, suicide and self-harm among nurses and midwives, the impact of patient suicide on mental health staff, and the experiences of staff working within inpatient mental health services who work with patients who self-harm.

Hazel also co-ordinates two coalitions dedicated to addressing the health inequalities caused by smoking; The Smoking in Pregnancy Challenge Group and the Mental Health and Smoking Partnership.

TG: This post graduate researcher also holds a role at Mansfield Museum where she runs the Art Power project funded by the Esmée Fairburn Foundation. Following a career as secondary art teacher in state schools, she completed an MA Museum and Heritage Development at NTU in 2021, winning the outstanding contribution award. Her PhD study, ‘Art Cares’ explores the contribution to wellbeing of collaborative creative activities for vulnerable women in a museum context.

Dr Emily Setty is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Surrey. Her academic research focuses on young people’s experiences of sex and relationships, both online and offline, and how the ‘online world’ is affecting their socio-sexual development, learning, and behaviour. She primarily conducts qualitative research whereby she speaks directly with young people about their perspectives and experiences and critically interprets the accounts they produce about how they are being affected and influenced by their experiences in their relationships and peer cultures. Dr Setty has recently conducted research on how lockdown affected sex and relationships for young people; risk and transgression online for youth; educating teenage boys about consent; harmful sexual behaviours and peer-on-peer abuse in schools; and ‘influencer culture’ for girls and young women. She works closely with a range of frontline professionals and organisations working with young people and national and local government to translate research findings into effective policy and practice designed to address the issues and challenges that young people face regarding sex and relationships in their contemporary digital cultures.
