Modou was a toddler when he was burned in a fire.  Scar tissue formed, fusing his head to his neck.  It was impossible to turn his head without turning his whole body.

Serina Vine served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. She spoke three languages and served in radio intelligence.  She never married and had no children. 

Our hospital ship is basically a floating city, and we need volunteers with many different skill sets. Crewmember Stuart Clear serves in a very important role.

A patient was admitted to our hospital ship, the Africa Mercy.  Suddenly, he asked the nurses: “Why are you so happy?  Why do you want to heal me for free?  And who is this Jesus Christ?”

Margaret Southern loved children and animals. She taught special-needs children in Greenville, South Carolina.  She lived in a modest house.

Jason McElwain was diagnosed with autism at age two.  He was considered high functioning, and his friends called him J-Mac.

People hear about Mercy Ships in many different ways.  And they choose to volunteer for many different reasons.

Jorge Munoz starts work at 5:15 in the morning.  He drives a school bus in New York City. When he finishes at 5 PM, he goes home, drinks a cup of coffee, and starts his second job.

Mercy Ships hires local people to work onboard our hospital ships in various roles. These day-crew help bridge the cultural gap between us and the people we serve.
