Physical deformities in Africa — like clubfeet — not only cause physical suffering. They can also trigger emotional distress due to the cultural view of such problems.

Mercy Ships volunteer Mirjam first saw little Siara at a patient screening in the Congo. The one-year-old baby weighed just 7 pounds and had a cleft lip and palate.

Mae Tai O’Malley’s parents were very career-oriented when she was young, so she and her brother often took care of themselves. She knew that she wanted to be more present in her own children’s lives.

Mercy Ships offers free surgical care in countries struggling to care for their own people. We also increase their ability to do that by offering training opportunities.
