Welcome back to The Merry Band of Pirates — the unofficially official Expeditionary Force podcast!
Joey is officially back from his deathbed, and the full crew (Andy, Joey, Steve, and Maryanne) reunites to dive headfirst into Chapters 6, 7, and 8 of SpecOps by Craig Alanson!
Before jumping into the action-packed three-act storyline, we kick things off with major ExForce news, including Craig Alanson's reveal of Book 20's title (Last Ride), community trivia scores on the 21-question Expeditionary Force Quiz, and subscriber shout-outs.
Then, we unpack one of the most tactical and hilarious stretches in the early series:
Chapter 6: Skippy replaces Colonel Joe's broadcast image and voice with Barney the Purple Dinosaur, before the Flying Dutchman finally locates an abandoned Elder site on a moon orbiting a "gas station" planet. But when seven Kristang warships jump in, the landing party is left stranded with only 30 hours of oxygen!
Chapter 7: Joe wrestles with the heavy moral burden of leadership and the possibility of sacrificing the crew, while Skippy reveals the Kristang commander is forcing his ships into grueling wargames.
Chapter 8: Facing impossible odds, Joe comes up with a brilliant "monkey-brained" tactical idea, saving the landing team without firing a single missile!
Plus, stick around for our tangents on the origin of "Hold My Beer", 7-Eleven Slurpees, "No Patience Man", and Kristang family dynamics!

Welcome back to another episode of The Merry Band of Pirates, the unofficially official Expeditionary Force podcast! With Joey out sick, Andy, Steve, and Mariane step up to cover the show—joined by special guest SP, on loan from the U.S. Space Force!
In this episode, we break down (Barney-style) Chapters 4 and 5 of Craig Alanson's SpecOps, book two of the Expeditionary Force book series:
Space Suit Shenanigans: The crew tackles zero-gravity vacuum maneuvers, testing Kristang powered armor suits outside the ship.
The Soul Finger Alarm: The crew enters an abandoned Kristang space station expecting high-alert klaxons, only to be greeted by a 1960s R&B funk song courtesy of Skippy.
Command & Morale: Joe draws a line in the sand with Dr. Venkman to prioritize mission objectives over scientific exploration, while boosting morale with unofficial freefall badges.
Stealth Tech & Barney Pranks: Skippy explains real stealth technology, then immediately edits Joe's video transmission to turn him first into a chimpanzee and then into Barney.
Deep Space Logistics: Evaluating 14-month flight vectors vs. Skippy's predictive target searching, plus a mind-bending look at Yottabyte data storage.

Welcome back to another episode of The Merry Band of Pirates, the unofficially official Expeditionary Force podcast! In Episode 18, Pirates Andy, Joey, Steve, and Mariane get right into the opening three chapters of SpecOps, the second book in Craig Alanson's bestselling series. After spending eight months covering Columbus Day, the crew accelerates the pace to tackle three full chapters in a single episode.
Rewinding from the Brink of Destruction (Chapter 1) The episode opens with an analysis of SpecOps' explosive beginning. The narrative drops readers directly into a high-stakes space battle: the Flying Dutchman is trapped within a dampening field generated by a Theranin destroyer squadron. As Skippy the Magnificent attempts to divert power to the jump drive, Colonel Joe Bishop prepares to initiate the ship's self-destruct mechanism to keep advanced technology out of enemy hands. Just as disaster seems certain, the story pauses for a classic narrative rewind—a storytelling technique known as in media res.
The podcast team discusses how Craig Alanson uses this trope to hook the reader instantly before jumping back to the immediate aftermath of Columbus Day. The Pirates compare this narrative structure to classic television shows like Alias, movies like Mission: Impossible, and the opening crawls of Star Wars.
Assembling OG MBoPs and the MBoPs 2.0 & Navigating Crew Dynamics (Chapter 2) Back at the start of the journey, the Flying Dutchman passes through a dormant wormhole, which Skippy closes behind them to protect Earth. Joe reflects on his newly assembled team, dubbed "Merry Band of Pirates 2.0". The expanded crew consists of 58 military personnel—including elite spec ops forces from five nations and 10 pilots—alongside 12 civilian scientists chosen for their ability to cooperate under stress, and one famously snarky alien superintelligence.
Joe wrestles with severe impostor syndrome (again), feeling vastly unqualified to lead such an elite group. Meanwhile, tension brews between the original "OG" crew members and the newly recruited spec ops personnel. The Pirates analyze the trauma bonding shared by the original team, who survived the chaos of the initial mission through sheer luck and determination. The discussion highlights the mutual intimidation: the spec ops soldiers respect the historic feats of the original crew, while the OG team worries about being outmatched by top-tier military operators.
The Great Crew Roster Dispute One of the funniest highlights is Skippy's outrage at being omitted from the official ship roster. When Joe attempts to register him, Skippy demands absurd ranks such as "Grand Exalted Field Marshal El Supremo". Joe counters by listing Skippy's age as six (or five) and placing his official rank as Asshole First Class. Sergeant Adams later reviews the updated roster and notes that Joe has been assigned mandatory training in potty use and "the birds and the bees". Additionally, Joey and Steve break down Skippy's logic behind giving everyone nicknames except Sergeant Adams, as Skippy wisely recognizes that calling her "Sarge Marge" would jeopardize his physical safety.
Setting Course & Life Aboard the Dutchman (Chapter 3) In Chapter 3, human pilots take the controls of the Flying Dutchman for the first time. Skippy presents Joe with two potential locations to locate ancient Elder communication devices (comm nodes). The crew sets course for the debris of an Elder starship orbiting a planet near an abandoned Kristang space station, though Skippy provides a stern warning about dangerous Elder Sentinels guarding the area.
During the month-long journey, Joe works to maintain morale and keep the crew engaged. Life on board features strict training sessions in Kristine powered armor suits. The Pirates touch upon ship terminology, emphasizing that the medical facility is strictly called the "sick bay" rather than an infirmary because "pirates are not infirm".
Galley Talk: Culinary Choices 1,200 Light-Years from Earth With the newly remodeled Flying Dutchman featuring a functional galley, crew members rotate cooking duties across six teams. The podcast crew examines a specific galley scene where dinner options are limited to meatloaf or glazed salmon. Joe chooses meatloaf, only to immediately regret his decision upon seeing the salmon. The Pirates debate their own preferences between meatloaf and salmon while questioning the wisdom of consuming seafood over a thousand light-years from open ocean water.
As always, the episode is filled with pop culture commentary and historical trivia.
Welcome back to a very special episode of The Merry Band of Pirates, the unofficially official Expeditionary Force podcast! Hosted by Pirates Andy, Joey, Steve, and Mariane, we have officially reached the end of Book 1, Columbus Day by Craig Alanson (performed by RC Bray).
In this episode, we dive into Chapter 19: Outbound. Although it is a shorter chapter at around 17 minutes, Craig Alanson packs in an incredible amount of setup for the next book (SpecOps) and the future of the series. We rejoin Colonel Joe Bishop and the crew aboard the Flying Dutchman as they prepare for an epic 2.5-year voyage into deep space.
Key Discussion Points & Chapter Breakdown:
Resupply & Ship Upgrades: The team discusses Lieutenant Commander Sims managing logistics, swapping out Thuranin-sized bunks for full-size human mattresses, constructing a proper galley, and downloading the entire internet—every movie, video game, and piece of media—for entertainment on the long journey ahead. And of course, making sure there will be cheeseburgers!
Transitioning Leadership & Delegation: How the crew shifts from relying entirely on Skippy the Magnificent to training humans to pilot, maneuver, and jump the ship themselves so they can operate independently.
The Core Mission & Hope vs. Resignation: Joe Bishop's determination to help Skippy find the Collective and uncover his origins, while grappling with the realization that this could be a one-way mission. We discuss Joe's leadership style, how he sells hope to his crew, and why morale is essential when facing extreme uncertainty in deep space.
Wormhole Transitions: Reopening the wormhole, stepping into the unknown, and heading toward a blue dwarf star system in the middle of nowhere.
Pop Culture & Science Deep Dives:
Star Trek & Sci-Fi Tropes: Warp Factor 9 references and deep-space travel comparisons.
Jack & the Beanstalk: The origin of the "Magic Beanstalk" nickname for the wormhole controller device.
Hunky Dory: Tracing the origins of the phrase back to 19th-century American slang and its connection to David Bowie's 1971 album.
Medieval Alchemy: Skippy explains how the Theranin breaks the laws of physics by converting waste directly into individual atoms of hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, etc.
Rank Structures & Clowns: Ranting about military ranks, Bobo the Clown, and the "Grand Exalted Poobah" from classic television like The Honeymooners and The Flintstones.
Monday Morning Quarterbacks & The A-Team: Breaking down Mr. T's iconic catchphrase "Stop the jibber jabber".
Veritasium & The Speed of Light: Discussing whether the speed of light is treated as a physical constant or a variable in physics and sci-fi.
See: Why No One Has Measured The Speed Of Light | Veritasium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTn6Ewhb27k
"According to our scientists, the way jumps were plotted used the speed of light as a variable, not an unchanging constant." Col. Joe Bishop, Columbus Day, Chapter 19
Fun Crew Banter:
Nostalgic computer games, including Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?
Rewriting disappointing TV show endings using Skippy's AI capabilities (including Game of Thrones, Lost, How I Met Your Mother, and Heroes).
Celebrating the completion of Book 1 and looking forward to Book 2: SpecOps!

In this very special episode of the Merry Band of Pirates, Andy, Joey, Steve, and Mariane sit down with Terry Clements, a legendary long-time beta reader for Craig Alanson's "Expeditionary Force" series. Terry shares the incredible story of how he met Craig and Irene, the heartwarming inspiration behind the character Brigadier General Lynn Bezanson, and the intense, high-pressure process of ensuring continuity across millions of words in the ExFor universe.
We also dive into Chapter 18 of "Columbus Day," where Joe finally gets his hands on an Earth-style cheeseburger and officially becomes a Colonel (again). Stick around for a delicious "In the Galley with Colonel Joe" segment where we debate the merits of jowl bacon, Monterey Jack with jalapeños, and the historical birthplace of the burger. Plus, hear Terry's memories of meeting RC Bray at Brayfest, along with his tips for keeping the science in sci-fi just vague enough to keep the nerds at bay!
Welcome back to the Merry Band of Pirates! In Episode 15, we leave the Kristang asteroid behind and head straight for home. The crew is back in Earth's orbit, but things get complicated fast when the Flying Dutchman (and our favorite snarky beer can, Skippy) intervene with the Kristang's plan for Earth's domination.
In this episode, we discuss Columbus Day Chapters 16 ("Home") and 17 ("Idle Hands"). We break down the crew's moral dilemma about the people left behind on Paradise, the hilarious disaster that is Joe's interaction with the U.S. President, and Skippy's total lack of respect for encrypted government networks at Fort Meade.
In this episode, we cover:
Plot Breakdown: The post-raid post-mortem, the reality of the bunkers in France, China, and Colorado, and the strategy to use railguns to clear out the Kristang.
Skippy's Finest Moments: Hacking the NSA, the "big red button" mishap, and his blunt assessment of humanity's bravery versus intelligence.
Podcast Shenanigans: We go off the rails as usual. Expect tangents on Austin Powers, Wheel of Fortune, and a very passionate debate about whether breakfast is allowed after 10:00 AM.
Listener Shout-out: A special thanks to StormhammerFirebrand5820 for the online props!

Some people complained about the video file size, so here is the audio-only edition: Welcome back to The Merry Band of Pirates, the unofficially official Expeditionary Force podcast! In this episode, the crew jumps into Chapters 12 and 13 of Craig Alanson's Columbus Day.
Things are heating up as Joe Bishop and the team secure the "Flying Dutchman"—a Thuranin star carrier that is far more than they bargained for. From the tactical brilliance of the gas giant explosion to the moral weight of Joe's "pirate-like" decision-making, we cover the critical moments that define the series' tone.
We pirates discuss: - The Tactical Gamble: Why Joe's strategy to deal with the Kristang might have been a masterstroke (or a massive plot hole). - Wrestling Morality: Joe Bishop's struggle with "Just War" theory and his evolution as a commander. - Baroque Horror: The bizarre design of the Thuranin star carrier's bridge and CIC. - Sludge Talk: Would you eat a synthesized mixture with the taste profile of oatmeal, carrots, and bologna? (We debate the worst and best flavor combos). - Pop Culture Check: Our hosts break down the references to Star Trek, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, and more.
Whether you're a veteran of the series or just starting your journey with Joe and Skippy, join us as we dissect the strategy, humor, and heart of the Expeditionary Force universe.
