This week on The Gralien Report, in the hours following this year’s “Big Game”, conspiracy theorists are already arguing that singer Lady Gaga’s performance was a “Satanic ritual”. Of course… we look at this, as well as some of the latest science news that includes the discovery of a “lost” ancient continent, and the mysteries of something that each of us does daily: sleep. This week on The Gralien Report, as many are reeling with confusion and division in uncertain times, we begin this week’s show by revisiting the words of the late Carl Sagan, who famously warned about his foreboding “of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time — when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues.” Sagan also urged that when the people have lost “our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.” Perhaps it is wise to revisit such words on occasion.

In addition to news that’s been trending this week, Micah and Matt engage in a discussion about the ghosts of Classic Country Music, following Micah’s recent visit to the grave of the legendary country music singer Hank Williams. Many ghost stories have been associated with Williams’ passing over the years, and we spend a bit of time looking at these, along with other strange tales; one of these, sent along to us by podcaster Jim Harold, tells what must be one of the most strange stories in all the history of country music, as well as the study of parapsychology. If true, and not the work of pure embellishment, what might it tell us about the idea of “life beyond death”, something even the late Carl Sagan had, though cautiously, questioned at times?

This week on The Gralien Report, we begin our weekly dispatches with a unique series of stories… and perhaps a near-fatal error that leads to a strange disturbance unlike anything we’ve experienced throughout the show’s history. Micah starts things off asking Hobbo and The Reverend about personal family ghost stories, setting the precedent for a night of oddities, eventually culminating in the primary broadcast being lost, and a complete system shutdown in the bunker.

Fortunately, the TARDIS senses Micah’s distress psychically and comes to the rescue, and once the boys return from their ordeal, they regain their senses and continue during the second hour in an examination of the strangest beliefs in superstition from around the world. Could it be that some strange recurring themes with superstition actually stem from human behavior, or even conditions like obsessive compulsive disorder? If so, what might it help us learn about humanity’s past, and the seemingly “irrational” things we see in the world of the past?

This week on The Gralien Report… Micah has detective stories on his mind this week, on the heels of completing the long-awaited final season of BBC’s Sherlock. This leads us to a discussion of various archetypes that exist in our culture, before we get into a quick breakdown of why “UFO” stories reported in the media today are about as far from being good UFOlogy as anything one might read. We also look at the latest developments in the ongoing “Slenderman” affair, and why this is something that may be worthy of further study by criminal psychologists. This, in addition to an antibiotic-resistant virus that has claimed the life of a woman in Reno, Nevada. Should we all be worried at this point?

Then in Hour Two, we look at the latest evidence pertaining to the famous skyjacking case of D.B. Cooper, who according to a group of amateur scientists, may have worked in a very specialized field, thanks to confirmation of rare earth elements detected on the tie that the skyjacker left aboard the plane he leapt from during his death-defying escape in 1971.

D.B. Cooper’s influence in American culture is widespread, which includes his assumed name having inspired director David Lynch in the creation of his famous FBI investigator Dale B. Cooper in the landmark series Twin Peaks. Throughout his investigation of the murder of Laura Palmer, Agent Dale Cooper experiences a number of strange experiences, which include prophetic dreams of a Red Room, and a host of other unusual things. But it doesn’t end here; the world of Twin Peaks seems to be strangely intertwined with a number of other elements of culture, which we spend time exploring on this week’s edition of The Gralien Report.
