We got another outright rockstar of a guest on this week's episode of The Midfield Podcast! We bring in our old friend Mark Schofield. Feels kinda weird typing that, "old-friend", but in a way it feels so, sooo riiight. And true! He's a phenomenal sports writer for the NFL and F1 as well as being the Midfield's 1st guest! We love him, you love him, let's get into it.

1:55 - We three dreamers recap the Super Bowl picks we made the last time we talked with Mark before the season started. We must also get a quick bite into Mark's article on the FIA rule-change, that we've been discussing on and off the pod for about a week and a half now. 16:25 - Lewis in Ruby! We talk Ferrari, and what  Lewis could contribute on and off the track, and then are immediately sidetracked into Williams, the NFL, and F1 teams punting? It's really hard to come up with good segmenting for the episode description when Mark comes to town, but that's what we live for. We get Mark's insider knowledge on Laura Mueller working with Ocon at Williams. We're Haas boys, so fingers crossed and elbows out.

30:17 - After dipping our toes in some Aston Martin waters we catch up on Mark's hot television appearances and personal highlights from the 2024 season. Will we spy our guy on Drive to Survive next season? Does he have plans to be as fantasmal next season? Can we get these answers before getting massively sidetracked? Who cares? Mark's got some great stories to share and we're all ears.

We try to reign it back in with a few more Midfield type discussions, but unfortunately we have to let Mark go. "If you love something..."   All rise! This session of the Midfield Podcast has come to order! We brought in a specialist, Lindsay aka @LegallyMotorsport, amidst the crazy legal updates to the FIA's tenements. To help us find the ins and outs, the who's and whys, the ifs, the ands, and the butts. Cause we can't emphasize BottA$% anymore! See?! censored immediately!

1:32 - You know the drill, first things first, we gotta get the background checks in order. Even with a lifetime racefan of a father, Lindsay found her way to F1 in 2021 through D2S just like us!

4:43 - Enough chitter chatter, time for the meat! We tear into the new legislation handed down from the powers on high at the FIA, and what the ultimately mean. At first glance we all agree, no potty-mouths = less viewership. MSB, MBS, whatever you wanna call him (Patty's not real clear either) seems to be making a major statement with these rules, and a possible power grab to boot?

14:14 - We discuss the terms and conditions and potential bail-out clauses of Colapinto's contract. Hopeful he can keep it out of the wall, we talk about his future at Alpine, or maybe even a slide right on back to Williams? Kinda gives our boy Jack Doohan a bit of a bump, but only time will tell.

  Just a little mind-melting scat to start us out as we bring in the freshest face to the Midfield guest lineup. It's our new friend Matt Trumpets from the Missed Apex Podcast! Tires baby! He's all four 'em! No more puns I swear. The man knows his rubber, and we know very little! 2025 is shaping up to be a Goodyear for the Midfield, okay for serious I'm done now.

  Into the origins with Mr. Trumpets! He spins his yarn from an early love of cycling in the dawn (literally) of the network television explosion. That's right kids, pre-streaming, you had to get up early to see things! My back hurts and I need an alka seltzer. But falling for F1 by proxy, and dedicating his mind to tires with a force that only a world class performer could.

  Viscoelasticity! Seriously my brain is still a puddle of goo from discussing tires. We get Matt's take on some of the "Technical Directives". It's good to have a guy like Matt on our team, who's been following the sport for a long enough to help us understand the mushy, flippy-floppy, lawyer-speak them fancy city-race car folk do! Fiddle-brakes! Hey, if ya ain't cheatin', ya ain't racin'.

  We had such an excellent time getting to know Matt, and got him to sign the blood pact, so he'll be back for sure! G'day mates!
  We're here spreadin' the sweet-badness for you, our loyal listeners, and whoah boy we've got another guest! It's our good friend Rod from SUPERLICENSE F1. His podcast that he's been heading up for over a decade. Not only is he kind of a big deal, he's a total sweetie and loves hanging out and talking race cars. Our kinda cat.

As always, we start with origin stories and how Rod found his way to Formula 1, and almost instantly start bitchin' about timezones. It's all in good fun, we're former night-owls turned early birds. We talk the first race of the season, and get Rod's take on the current Australian drivers for 2025.

Welcome to the new year Midfielders!
  It's the offseason, so you know what that means, it's time to reach into our bag of friends and bring on the guests! Up first is our bud Marshall the Marshal! No seriously, it took Patrick a good bit to get his head around it too. It's his name, AND his job. Well, volunteer side gig, but still super-cool nonetheless!

As always with a first guest, we get the history. The origin story of our new friend's race fandom. From an early age, Marshall's been clued in; to the ins and outs of the ins and outs on the track. Over 365 days in his Marshaling logbook, he gives us lowdown on what's a good/bad day for a track marshal, some of his favorite racing memories, and what it takes to BE a track marshal.

Happy New Year Midfielders!
 Our bellies and calendars have been sated, and it's time to get back to work. We clear the board and are getting back into things by giving EACH team a New Year's resolution. That's right, there's no side-bar, cause there's technically no midfield at the moment. Settle in with that last bit of leftover nog in the bowl and let's break down what the teams need to do in 2025.

  8:20 - Finishing off the teams we don't normally talk about. Feels kinda good, kinda naughty! Be nice, make decisions, pick a driver, we've got a laundry list of resolutions ready to rock for our '25 teams. Feel like we missed one? The Wrap up! 
  Hey there Midfielders! The final race of the season! The champions have been chosen, on (and off) the grid! Like Williams, we're amazed we've made it this far, and are thankful for a spell of some off season shenanigans. But before we pop the champaign and crown the victors, it's time for one last rundown from the top-down!

26:30 - We took down the first half of the grid. Ferrari, George, and a little bit of true midfield splashed throughout. Now to the Astons. A real off-year for our color-sake team. We had dreams of Fernando-plums dancing through our heads, for our P10 pick this week, and he put in a solid job taking P9. Lance though...

29:00 - We didn't forget, YOU almost forgot, we said something nice about Lance YET AGAIN. Say whatever you will, we probably said more nice things about Lance Stroll than any other pundits in 2024. #winning. We talk Frenchies, we talk GM and Cadillac, we get into all the gravy. Haas, Haas is the gravy.

53:45 - VCARB. Perhaps not the right choice to close out the final race weekend, but hey, we went there. Patty's got his noises back! (Heads up for the impact drill SFX...) We're a lil spent after a long season of being so superiorly mediocre, and are looking forward to the off season as much as Ocon.

26:15 - Whew, glad that's outta the way. Now back to our guilty pleasure. The L-Pines! Pierre's a-rockin' and Este's already at Haas. Normally we're not big on the Frenchmen, but when we get one to lock down first DNF, we can't get enough. Bad Boy to come! And then Pmag... 
 
38:35 - VCARB. Rough weekend all around. We do a quick round of "Can You Imagine?". It's tough, tough to imagine, struggling this much when they looked so promising after canning the American.

42:00 - Another round of "Can You Imagine?"! What a treat. We dip into Walliams like they dip into, you know what, it's not even fun anymore, it's just sad... Dan gives us a quick sneak peek at what we can expect for Abu Dhabi.
