There was a time when trucking felt different.

The trucks weren't as comfortable. The technology wasn't nearly as advanced. Drivers relied on paper maps, CB radios, and experience rather than satellites and screens.

But many drivers will tell you there was something special about life on the road back then.

In this episode of Gen X Trucking with The Mighty Philbert, we take a look at the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 and how it transformed the trucking industry forever. We'll explore the rise of trucking culture in the 1970s, the deregulation era, falling freight rates, changing driver pay, and the growing pressures that modern drivers face.

Remember when truckers were the last American cowboys?

Before GPS, before ELDs, before smartphones, before every mile of the interstate looked exactly the same, there was a different kind of road culture.

In the 1970s, convoy culture exploded across America. CB radios became a national obsession. Truck drivers became folk heroes. And movies like Smokey & the Bandit captured an America that felt bigger, freer, and a whole lot more unpredictable.

For the last couple of years this channel explored religion, skepticism, counter-apologetics, Gen X culture, trucking stories, and the strange circus we call internet life. But somewhere along the way, I realized I was spending more time talking about outrage than the things I actually love.

This video explains why I’m stepping away from the YouTube atheist community, why recent events forced me to reevaluate where I belong, and why I’m rebranding the channel into something more honest, creative, and human.

But for the online atheist YouTube community that once claimed to stand for reason, accountability, and questioning authority… until too many people decided protecting tribes and personalities mattered more than protecting people.
