  • 64: MiningMaven Podcast No 63 2017 New Year edition with Russian Business specialist John Helmer #gold #russia #mining
In this special New Year’s edition of the MiningMaven Podcast we welcome back Russian business specialist John Helmer, who is longest serving Anglo-American correspondent in Russia. He is also the author of Russia focused business blog Dances with Bears (http://johnhelmer.org) where he keeps a watchful eye on Russian business affairs and the machinations of the global mining scene.
What does ‘Uncertainty’ mean for investors in 2017?
As we head into 2017 we are reminded of the maxim ‘markets hate uncertainty’ though given the fast changing global political landscape, following Brexit and the election of ‘The Donald’ to The White House - for the year ahead at least, uncertainty is one thing we can be certain of.
As investors, we are always looking at uncertainty with an opportunistic eye so we were keen to hear John’s view on the US Election result and what changes we can expect in terms of Russia’s relationship with the West as a consequence. We then go on to discuss how this could possibly impact on the mood and sentiment around Russian investment opportunities. John also gives us his views on the Canadian markets and its mining sector in particular (it’s fair to say he’s not a big fan!)
John is perhaps not as sanguine as your host with regard to investment prospects for 2017 (but then, not many are!). As mining exploration investors we are the eternal optimists and for us uncertainty is a way of life; we have learned to embrace the kind of risk that will cause more cautious souls to run for the hills. After all (as we constantly remind ourselves) we only need to get one right and it will take care of the rest of the disappointments – and then some!
Long-time listeners will recall John’s previous appearances on the podcasts when we discussed the state of affairs with the various conflicts between Russia and the West, Media Coverage, Economic Sanctions, Oil and Commodity prices, Ukraine and much, much more! We hope you will find this latest installment and John’s views to be interesting and insightful.
