On this episode of Spaceport Radio, Mr. Haunt and I take a moment to discuss the passing of Dustin Diamond, who was best known for portraying the character Screech in the Saved By The Bell franchise. I never considered the show or its characters to play a prominent part of my subconscious, but news of his death this week brought to mind the role he played on the show and in culture at large. Mr. Haunt and I both find ourselves considering the nerd culture we were a part of growing up, the eternal outsider whose interests were never "cool". I found comfort in Screech's presence on TV at a time when I, too, was going through high school, wholly unpopular and banished to the fringes. Screech will always be the lovable, endearing nerdy outsider, but an outsider nonetheless.

On this episode of Spaceport Radio, I sit down with my friend Frank Jacobus. Frank and I met at Cooper Union in 1993 and have been close friends ever since. Our speculative ideas remain as vibrant and inspiring today as they were when we were teenagers. Today we talk about how our creative processes have changed over the years, and how Frank approaches teaching his students and his children about living a creative life. We also get into his thoughts on the evolution of creative professions, including what he tells his own kids (and doesn't tell them) about that fine balance between "making art" and "making a living". He gives insight into how space influences our mood, and how he has learned to trust his creative intuition when it comes to everything from architecture to poetry. And would Picasso be on Instagram? 

Frank Jacobus, AIA is Principal of SILO, and is Associate Professor and Associate Department Head in the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas. From 2016 - 2018 he was 21st Century Chair of Building Technologies at the FJSoA where he lead design-build, fabrication, and advanced technology initiatives. Frank taught previously at the University of Idaho. He has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Cooper Union and an MArch II from the University of Texas. Frank is author Archigraphic: An Infographic Look at Architecture (Laurence King), and The Visual Biography of Color (ORO).

On this episode of Spaceport Radio, I talk with my friend Reed Reimer about his process for creating music, and how he approaches client requests for bespoke soundtracks. We talk about how he has learned to not take artistic criticism personally, while still using the music creation process as a way to process complex emotions.

What drives Reed to work harder and inspires him is working with other wonderful artists and creating new worlds. A great example of that is the recent project Codeburst, which was written with Mat Kaminski and long-time collaborator Benjamin Emory Larson.

Having played guitar for almost 30 years, Reed received his music composition degree, and immediately began scoring films and other media. You can see some of his professional credits on IMDB, but you may have heard his music on various podcasts, commercials, or ad campaigns.

He lives in Minnesota with his wife and twin girls, and if he isn’t writing music, creating stories, or developing life-long friendships with his project partners, he’s generally pretending to be some kind of creature for the kids to ride.
