We had to get there eventually. This week we devote the podcast to porn – the reason why so many of us have come to the podcast in the first place. It's a big topic so this is just an introduction, a jumping off point.

We'll do a basic analysis of the pros and cons of porn. We'll also take a look at why internet porn makes old-fashioned print porn look like a poor relation.

Guilt and Shame.These two words are often used interchangeably but have different meanings when it comes to sex addiction. Understanding this difference allows us to become aware of the importance of the influence of our pasts on our current behaviors.  The difference also provides a chance to explain why we feel powerless to avoid behaviors that we don't wish to perform.

 Freud helps us understand our behavior by pointing us to the importance of timeline when analyzing our lives.  Finally, we'll discuss what we can do to improve our situation with respect to guilt and shame.

Sex addiction is as much a social condition as it is an individual one. Sex addiction is often reinforced by social structures like family and the internet. Society is also impacted by the acting out behavior of addicts themselves.

Like HIV/AIDS, the early years of public awareness around sex addiction have been filled with missteps which confuse the public health nature of the problem with moral judgement. Leo Bersani's essay, 'Is the Rectum a Grave', provides a foundation for the discussion of the ways in which the institutional response to the HIV/AIDS crisis was lacking and allows us to draw a comparison with our more recent experience with sex addiction.
