Our top story is: Daniel Campbell is using poetry to help process his father’s death from ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. The 13-year-old Oakdale boy is being mentored by Wendy Angulo, a poet in the New York City borough of Queens, through an art-therapy program called ALSO US. It takes its name from ALS, a disorder that affects the function of nerves and muscles.

Our top story is: It was a milky, slippery mess when a tanker overturned just off Highway 99 in Ceres yesterday morning. According to the California Highway Patrol, a milk tank driver took the exit too quickly and his big rig overturned. The ramp was closed for several hours as workers cleaned up spilled milk and fuel.

Our top story is: A Turlock man is 1 of 4 Americans who have mysteriously died while vacationing in the Dominican Republic in the past few months. The deaths are now being investigated by the FBI. Family members of 67-year-old Robert Bell Wallace said he became severely ill in April after drinking scotch from the minibar in his room at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino resort in Punta Cana.

Our top story is: Neighbors are mourning the deaths of a 38-year-old mother and 2 of her little girls, ages 5 and 3, after a car crashed into their home near Ceres early Sunday. The California Highway Patrol said the crash was reported shortly after 1:30am at a duplex on the 1200 block of Sam Avenue.

And when that vehicle is a sheriff’s patrol unit with 2 deputies inside — well, that’s strike 3. The California Highway Patrol reported that it happened in west Modesto. The deputies suffered minor injuries and were treated at a hospital.
