  • What money lies are you telling yourself?

Julie is an award winning independent financial adviser and a certified financial coach and host of the Women & Money Café Podcast. She is a longstanding member of the multi-award winning Chartered Becketts FS Investment Committee. Her thirst for knowledge continues, and she is due to become an ICF accredited coach in Spring 2023.

But... "she doesn't look like one" she says.

She's thrown away the heels, the corporate suit, and started to really focus on her client relationships.

Years of qualifications and research have led Julie to have a unique understanding of how our brains behave under stress, and how this impacts on our financial decision-making and well-being.

Equality and justice are the cornerstones of Julie’s work, and so she focuses on supporting women to be equally represented within financial services, and the world! She spreads the word through her podcast, The Women & Money Café, and as a speaker at events.

Julie is best known for her work with women who have lost their partner. She chooses to work with widows as she recognises that these women have unique needs that most financial services companies ignore.

Julie lives by the motto that we rise by lifting others up.

  • Do you blame your upbringing, schools, or parents for "the way you turned out"?

Sofia Jones, financial adviser and owner of Penny House shares:

"When I was working in well-paid job in pharmaceuticals, I started learning about what I would need to do to train as a mortgage adviser. I believe everything happens for a reason. I was lucky to find a great broker who was willing to advise me when I was buying my first property, opposed to just completing a transaction, they taught me a huge amount about the industry and gave me a great insight, this encouraged me to take the leap and work in a sector that I was passionate about. I started Penny House in 2017 from my garden shed. Alongside Penny House I also continued to grow my buy-to-let portfolio by buying properties that need renovating, doing the necessary works, and then renting them out.Fast forward to today, the company is based in London I split my time between London and my home office in Oxford. But the coolest part is I’m no longer alone, I get to work with a great team. The company has advisers based in other areas over the UK and arranges nationally.I specialise in complex cases such as buy to let portfolio lending, business owners finance and insurance but Penny House and the team collectively can arrange all types of mortgages with the core of our business being first time buyers and re-mortgages so we have a diverse client base and knowledge between us."

  • The Money Honey was an accident - I nearly binned the idea due to fear of what people might think

Does the fear of what others might think every stop you from doing something magical? Does imposter syndrome paralyse you from actually taking action?

This was me last summer when I was rebranding from The Content Hive to Manuka Media and my personal brand persona was born: The Money Honey.

I wasn't convinced. I told the graphic designer and brand strategist to bin it. I was too embarrassed to launch into the financial world with this name because I thought people would other find me "cute", or "too girly" or SEXY. I didn't want people to sexualise or ridicule this name.

That's why I DID IT ANYWAY.

I had to reconnect with my values. My goals. My vision.

I had to reconnect with the purpose. WHY AM I DOING THIS? I asked myself. And that's why I had to get over myself, out of my own way and start this podcast otherwise I would be letting you down.

Listen to the show to find out my story about the the birth of The Money Honey. I know it will help you to reflect on your own limiting beliefs and also evaluate if you are in your own way avoiding taking action.

If you find this show helpful please give it a thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe! The bigger the show, the more I can provide this safe learning environment for you.

  • Sally Precious-Ward from Together Money talks all about navigating the financial services, discrimination in the work place and working around menopause.

Sally has done so many different roles within the Financial Services world, starting out her career training as a Financial Adviser, then switching specifically to being a Mortgage Broker (she says because she saw the Mortgage Advisers receiving so many bouquets of flowers as thanks for helping people to buy their dream homes, yet people were never so grateful about their investments)!

She switched to Business Development in 2007, alas with Mortgage Express who were then nationalised as part of the Bradford and Bingley Group in 2008 and no longer had any business to develop.

Cue a switch into working with the back book of their mortgage business, working with portfolio clients restructuring portfolio debts for accounts that were deemed high risk.

Having done the broking, lending and back book side of the business she was well placed to decide which area she wanted to continue her career in and decided relationship management is her biggest strength.  She is now a Regional Account Manager for Together Money where she has worked since 2020.

She has the pleasure of working within a great environment at Together and is lucky to work with a female strong team, including her manager Michelle Walsh and the Director of Sales, Tanya Elmaz.
