  • Austin Pohlen — Training Celebrities, Moving to LA, & When Preparation Meets Opportunity | MTFP Ep.65

Honored to have on my man, Austin, for his first ever podcast conversation. But don't worry, he didn't disappoint and came with one hell of a story. I met Austin a little while back through mutual friends, and it was right before he got all big-time on me and moved out to LA to become a founding trainer at the new DOGPOUND gym.

See, Austin is originally from Minnesota and played college basketball with hopes of working as a personal trainer. He got his degree, interned at a gym to gain some experience, and even wanted to give online coaching a try—that is, until he Instagram DMed the founder of DOGPOUND in LA (which was newly established) and asked for an interview to become a trainer. His wish was granted, he flew out to LA, nailed the interview, and he's now living in West Hollywood where he trains celebrities like Justin Bieber and Adam Levine (maybe you've heard of them?).

In all honesty, I couldn't be happier for Austin and it's very much deserved. But you've gotta hear all the twists and turns (plus other random gems) in the story for yourself, so make sure you check this one out. Dreams do come true, my friends! Happy listening.

  • Are Energy Drinks Bad For You? | Minisode #37

Hitting on a subject that could crush some dreams if the consensus doesn't lean towards their favor. But, luckily for both sides, the answer isn't so cut and dry. There are pros and cons to energy drinks, and it will be up to the individual if they're worth it or not.

These are the questions I answer in this Minisode:

    -What’s in an energy drink?

    -Do energy drinks cause harm?

    -Who’s at risk?

    -Are there benefits?

    -Are they bad for you?

  • "How Do I Get My Workout Habit Back?" | Minisode #36

I've received a version of this question quite a bit here recently from my own personal training clients as well as from people on social media. We're in this weird grey area where some gyms will be opening up in the near future, which means we've almost made it back to "normal" again. But, for now, we're still stuck doing home workouts and we keep rationalizing to ourselves that once gyms open up again — THEN we're gonna kill it. But we all know that's not going to cut it and we still feel stuck in this rut of not doing anything.

In this Minisode, I break down a few ways to get that motivation for working out again and how to keep it there long-term. Sometimes "life" (or a pandemic) can get in the way, but we shouldn't let that hold us back from keeping ourselves healthy. This Minisode should help.

  • DrunkCast Q & A #7 | MTFP Ep.64

Every once in a while, I like to do a solo podcast where I answer your best questions on training, nutrition, and whatever else you all can come up with — these are called my "DrunkCast Q & A's". I have a blast doing them and you guys seem to enjoy them too, so it's a win-win. This was an even more unusual DrunkCast than normal because I was also live on Instagram at the same time, so I drift back and forth between answering listeners' questions and talking to those who were hanging with me live. Hope you enjoy it!

    QUESTION TIMESTAMPS:

(3:11) How much cardio is too much? Since lockdown I've been running more as well as weight training with a bar and equipment I have at home. Thanks!

(12:17) I just graduated school and moved away. The only “friends” I have are the people who I work with. Most of which are my parents' age. How do I make friends my age?

(20:15) I am about to be 54 and post-menopausal. I have lost 31 lbs over the last 13 months by tracking cals and eating in a deficit and doing lots of walking. I want to gain muscle — what’s your advice for the best way to go about this?

    (27:49) Favorite books on nutrition?

(30:33) My friends are all getting married, adopting dogs, buying houses, and enjoying life. I don’t feel like I’m on the same chapter as them anymore since I’m not doing any of that. I’m really trying hard to not compare myself to them, but it’s super challenging and I feel like I’m growing apart from them...any advice?

    (43:28) Thoughts on running marathons?

(45:49) Sick of my current at-home dumbbell routine, what should I do?

(48:48) Guilty pleasure show to watch?

(51:24) When this is over, how will your view on life have changed?

(58:58) If you could only drink this for the rest of life......Kentucky Mule with mediocre bourbon OR Old Fashioned a with the best bourbon in the world? OR neither and stick to Diet Coke?

(1:00:15) Online dating for guys. Is that our only option these days? I’m kinda over being single and would really like to find the real deal, not just a "friend with benefits." And I think it’s creepy to go sit at the bar alone and wait for a Hallmark movie scene to unveil. Tips? Advice?

  • Dr. Mel Davis — Staying Calm Under Pressure, Trying New Things, Neuroscience, Psychedelics, & More! | MTFP Ep.63

I was super stoked to finally have this chat with Dr. Mel, as I'm a huge fan of her work and infinitely interested in her field of study: neuroscience and behavior change. Dr. Mel holds a PhD in Neurobiology and Behavior and has 10 years of research experience. She is also currently a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Giva Santana at One Jiu-Jitsu, and is a multiple-time IBJJF Master World Champion. She has even represented the United States in the international Abu Dhabi World Pro Competition on multiple occasions. So, basically, she's an extremely smart badass.

In this episode, we chatted about her move out of the city in California and into the wilderness of Montana, how she got into the fitness industry and her profession of choice with the fitness overlords at Renaissance Periodization, how staying calm and solving problems during jiu-jitsu translates into the real world, exploring the science behind psychedelics and spirituality, the result of people's fitness and health after this quarantine is lifted, and much more!

  • 4 (Uncommon) Lessons Quarantine Should Teach Us | Minisode #33

Everybody is giving their 2 cents on what they've learned during this quarantine, but everything I've seen thus has been pretty generic and repetitive. I'm not claiming to be some thought-leader, but I wanted to try and talk about things that I haven't heard yet and would be important to remember going forward. Sometimes we need to check ourselves. Other times, we have a worldwide pandemic do it for us. And in this Minisode, I wanted to reflect on four lessons we should start paying more attention to as the quarantine begins to lift. Hope it helps!

  • Foods To Eat When Cutting Vs Bulking | Minisode #32

I'm a big proponent of flexible dieting and If It Fits Your Macros (IIFYM). But one area where people get it wrong with flexible dieting is saying that the foods don't matter, all that matters is that you hit your calorie and macro targets for the day and you'll see results. While that's (mostly) true, you shouldn't aim to fit as much shit into your diet as possible, nor should you make your dieting harder than it needs to be. The former can put your health at risk and the latter is unnecessary.

In this Minisode, I explain how to avoid these mistakes and WHY you should eat certain foods when you're bulking vs when you're cutting. Plus, I add some specific examples. Eating fewer calories than normal or eating more calories than normal are both difficult, but with strategic food choices, reaching your goals will be twice as likely. And lastly, if you don't know whether you should cut or bulk, I make sure to cover that as well. Give it a listen, and I hope it helps.

  • Greg Nuckols — Living The Simple Life | MTFP Ep.62

I've followed Greg for a while and I've always enjoyed his demeanor when simplifying complex topics on training, nutrition, and all things fitness. He's a drug-free powerlifter, strength coach, fitness writer, nerd (his words), dog lover, and a frequent shopper of Wal-Mart apparel. He's a smart dude, but it's his wit and dry sense of humor that puts him a step ahead of the others in our field.

I was happy to experience it first-hand in this episode together where we cover a plethora of non-fitness topics, such as: how he got into the fitness industry, how he lives below his means and doesn't care much about money, what he *does* enjoy spending money on, his recent trip to Iceland, his love for food and his all-time favorite meal, and towards the end, we discover two alternative careers that Greg would've liked to pursue in a different lifetime (hint: for one of them, he needs to be about a foot taller). It was a great episode and I don't even think Greg knew what he got himself in to, so I know you'll be as entertained as I was as this conversation unfolds. Hope you enjoy!
