I enjoyed making this podcast because it has a nice mix of broad advice with specific, tangible advice. I shared it with my email newsletter last week (you can sign up here) and received solid feedback, so I hope you enjoy it. In this episode, I cover one habit that encourages you to reward healthy behaviors you want to repeat. Then, I break down two routines that I use each day to be more productive and improve my well-being. Lastly, I end the podcast with three specific gadgets I use to get more work done, enhance my environment, manage my money, and ensure you always purchase the best alcohol. Like I said, there's a nice mix here. But I think you'll get a lot out of it if you listen to the end. Enjoy!
Gadgets and Apps Mentioned:
Digital Kitchen Timer
Anker Mini Bluetooth Speaker

For this Minisode, I took a question from a listener. (To get your question answered, fill out the form below.)
Kyle: "I’ve decided to make it a goal to try to hit 1k across the big 3 lifts. I probably need to add 15-25lbs for all 3. How would you program to get there? (Currently lifting 4 days per week). Also, I currently do 1 hour+ of cardio (Pelaton/running) 4x per week. Should I adjust that? What about nutrition? [Stats: 41 yr old male; 5’10 160ish; 2 kids; pretty professional occupation; 1RMs 285SQ, 230BP, 425DL]"

This Minisode is a mix between having better gym etiquette and getting better results from your fitness plan. There's some things that people do in the gym that drive me absolutely insane because they're simply being inconsiderate. There's other things that people do in the gym where they just don't know any better. They think it's a good idea, but it's actually holding them back. I break them all down in this Minisode and what to do instead. It's a nice mix of laughs and learning. Enjoy!

For those of you who are new here: Every once in a while, I like to do a podcast where I answer your questions on nutrition, workouts, career, skills, alcohol, life, money, and whatever else you can think—whilst sipping some bourbon. Sometimes, a lot of bourbon.
For the rest of youse: you know how these go. Enjoy!
TIMESTAMPS:
(4:00) Q1 (part 1) - Recommendation for good workout shoes?
(6:24) Q1 (part 2) - How do I keep my feet from getting busted from working out?
(8:36) Q2 - What is your definition of yo-yo dieting? How do you view a little weight gain over the holidays? If I lose 10lbs, gain it over the holidays, and lose it in January every year, is this yo-yo dieting?
(14:10) Q3 - I'm studying for the bar and even taking an hour out of my day to workout makes me feel so guilty. How do I get over this and utilize that time as stress relief?
(19:26) Q4 - What's the "end goal" for you? Do you think you'll do fitness forever?
(25:47) Q5 - When you see pictures of super lean, competition-ready Matt, does that affect you mentally in any way? Do you ever wish you were that lean or jacked, or are the trade-offs so far from worth it that it doesn't phase you? If seeing them does bring up negative emotions for you, what do you say to yourself to level yourself back out?
(30:50) Q6 - What's your biggest regret?
(36:44) Q7 - Aside from the obvious, why are rest days important? Should I refrain from any exercise on these wonderful days?
(40:46) Q8 - What is a character trait you admire in others that you don't have yourself?
(43:55) Q9 - What are the most valuable lessons & experiences playing football on a team gave you?

This Minisode is the one other fitness coaches don't want you to hear. Ok, it might not be that dramatic, but it's a good one. I break down, step-by-step, how you can create your own fat loss plan. I start with the end goal in mind, the rate of fat loss you want each week, when to take diet breaks, and more. You won't want to miss this one.

I'll be the first one to tell you that I, without a doubt, FEEL like I'm burning more fat when I do cardio on an empty stomach. I just feel leaner. That said, do my "feelings" match up with what the science says? That's what I discuss on this Minisode, along with discussion around growth hormone (HGH) secretion during fasting, if BCAAs are worth it before fasted exercise, my personal recommendations, and more. Hope it helps!

We all know sleep is important. We don't need more videos shaming us about how terrible our sleep habits are and how it's negatively affecting our health. (We get reminded every morning.) That said, I do think there's use for tips that *actually* help people. So in this Minisode, I wanted to break down the best "hacks" I've found to legitimately work. And no, there's no "biohacking" or infrared lights or $500 contraptions required. Just simple tips you can start implementing tonight to get better sleep. Hope it helps!

Enough is enough, my friends. Hearing about these common nutrition myths just shouldn't be happening in 2021, so I wanted to cover each of the following myths in this Minisode:
1. Too much protein is bad for you and hurts your kidneys. (1:41)
2. Carbs are bad for you/fattening. (4:48)
3. Red meat is bad for you. (8:40)
4. Apple Cider Vinegar is a superfood. (10:25)
5. Organic food is healthier. (12:08)
6. Eating more frequently boosts your metabolism. (14:13)
Hope it helps.

In this solo episode, I ran through some of the best ideas from my "Notes" app. Whenever I find an interesting point or lesson from someone way smarter than me, I make a note of it in the app. So I wanted to break down what the idea is, my interpretation of it, and how to put it into action.
The 6 ideas I covered:
1) "Emotions are value-neutral. That is, I can be happy for great reasons and I can be happy for terrible reasons. I can be anxious for great reasons and I can be anxious for terrible reasons. The value of the emotion is in the reason for the emotion, not in the emotion itself." - Mark Manson, Author (3:54)
2) (On writing jokes) "If you trim too much fat, you lose the flavor." - Andrew Schultz, Comedian (8:33)
3) "You have to worry some. But after the 18th lashing against yourself, you have to ask "is this useful?" Not: 'I am angry.' Instead: 'There is anger.'" - Dan Harris, on the Tim Ferriss Podcast (18:34)
4) "Over Productivity —> Complacency. Hyperproductive mornings lead to complacent afternoons." - Not sure. (20:44)
5) "True wealth = The health of me and my family. Never feeling rushed." - Khe Hy, radreads.co (28:45)
6) "The problem is... sincerity is not cool. Sincerity does not entertain. Sincerity is lame. It’s also incredibly easy to criticize or show to be hypocritical." - Mark Manson, Author (39:52)

Everyone knows the feeling when it's been a few hours since dinner, you're winding down for the night, but you get the urge to snack. You try to ignore it, only to feel the urge amplify, shortly followed by your brain rationalizing why you should eat everything. It can be a constant struggle, especially if it's intertwined with some emotional eating and coping. But after coaching people 1-on-1 for several years, I've found some ways to stick to your diet when you make up every reason not to. So in this Minisode, I give my best tips on how to manage overeating at night while on a diet (without using crazy amounts of discipline or willpower). Hope it helps!
