As a Registered Dietitian, I respect nuance and context when it comes to complicated areas such as "Intuitive Eating" and behavioral psychology around food. So, while this Minisode could've been an hour long, I tried my best to fit it in in about 15 minutes. That said, even the generalizations I make in this Minisode could be a huge mental "unlock" for people who've struggled with this transition. Some of this advice will be for people who are very strict and possibly afraid to stop tracking. And some of the advice will be for others who simply want to transition from tracking to not tracking due to convenience. I've seen it work successfully for both types of people through the 1-to-1 clients I've coached. Either way, you'll walk away smarter after listening to this one. Enjoy!

This was a fun episode for me because Jake was my online fitness coach for about two years back in 2014-2016. He helped me win my natural (drug-tested) bodybuilding pro card and was a huge help to me when I first started my online coaching business. Now, Jake is working a full 9-5 job while ramping up his fitness coaching business once again. He's also an IPE Pro Natural Bodybuilder (and a stand-up guy).
In this episode, we talk about:
-Reminiscing about when me and Jake worked together
-Jake's coaching background with The Strength Guys
-How I was as an online coaching client
-How fitness has stayed constant while other things change
-How fitness keeps us grounded
-How Jake is working a full-time job and doing online coaching on the side
-Relating to clients during fat loss phases
-"Stealth dieting"
-Male insecurities around body image
-Dealing with "letting yourself go" compared to your past self
-The evolution of motivators around working out
-Why you shouldn't ever make your own plans
-Staying motivated when working out from home
-Making better decisions with your nutrition
-How Jake and I eat on a regular basis
-The importance of short-term "obsession"
-How do we know who to listen to for fitness advice?
-Jake's alternate-reality career
-And much more!

When people are trying to lose body fat, they immediately assume you need to cut calories and ramp up the cardio. Sure, cardio can help you lose body fat, but it's only one tool in the toolbox. A tool that needs to be used sparingly and only in minimum effective doses.
I cover:
-Should you even do cardio?
-What's the best type of cardio?
-How much cardio should you do?
-Is fasted or fed cardio better?
-How to factor in weekend activities such as hiking or jogging.
-The "interference effect" on muscle growth with too much cardio.
-And more.

You can't diet forever. Eventually, you'll want to take a diet break, reverse diet, or focus on building muscle again. This may require some weight gain in the process. But if you've just spent 3, 6, even 12 months working hard to lose weight, it can be intimidating. The same thing happens for people who've been "skinny" their whole life, but are afraid of adding too much fat while they bulk. So in this Minisode, I wanted to cover a few strategies I use with clients to ease their mind and keep their long-term goals in focus. Hope it helps.

Confession: I'm a self-help junkie. I'm constantly striving to learn more and connect ideas. Because of this, I have a running "IDEAS" note on my phone that is a long string of 1-3 sentence ideas that really resonated with me. When I consume something that is particularly valuable, I make a note of it. And in this solo episode, I picked 8 of the best ones I've learned recently, explained them, then elaborated on how to apply them to your life. If you're in your 20s or 30s, I think this podcast will be one you return to again and again. Hope you enjoy.

Knowing the principles and tactics around what you need to focus on for the best fitness results is important, but incomplete if it stops there. You also need to think about how you can APPLY these on a regular basis. You need to do what works, but doing them for a day won't make a difference. So in this Minisode, I talk about how to be more consistent, how to avoid the all-or-nothing mentality, and provide a mental framework called "fitness dials" to help you stay on track even when real life happens. Hope it helps!

One of my buddies recently asked me what to do when his fitness goals differed from his spouse, yet they still have to agree on what to eat for dinner each night. It's not practical, nor desired, for most to eat differently than their partner or family. Nobody needs to sacrifice family dinners for the sake of having less fat around their waist. So, in this Minisode, I give my best advice to stick to your fitness goals without completely ruining dinner for yourself and everyone else. I make sure to give specific examples using common meals most people eat on a regular basis. As you'll find out, the devil is in the details, and I reveal it all in this one. Hope it helps!

The utility behind the idea of "leverage" is that it's a force multiplier for your efforts, skills, and judgment. Without leverage, your input matches your output in a 1:1 relationship. With leverage, you can multiply the output of that relationship almost ad infinitum. To give a clear example, we can use this podcast episode and imagine "the Internet" as our source of leverage. Without the Internet, I'd have to have this singular conversation with each individual person. Sure, I could maybe fill up a large room of people and speak to more people that way. But with the Internet as leverage, I can reach as many people that have access to WiFi (i.e., billions). So in this episode, I relate this concept to fitness and explain 5 ways you can increase your input-to-output ratio by using high leverage activities to accelerate your progress. Hope it helps!

There are few things more boring than learning how to eat more vegetables, and yet, here we are. Albeit boring, we know we simply need to suck it up and get them in. They're crucial for fat loss, general health, and for longevity. So, I made this Minisode to help you do just that without hating yourself. Most other videos and articles I've seen on this subject were very optimistic about what they were recommending, but they failed in practicality. I made this video for normal people like us who probably don't love eating veggies and want to add them in without changing much. Hope it helps!

I had the extreme pleasure of having my friend Aadam on the podcast again for the third time. And just like the two previous episodes (Episode 9 & Episode 49), this one was phenomenal—maybe even the best yet? I'll let you decide, but for those who don't know, Aadam is a fitness coach and writer for his site, physiqonomics.com. He's one of the best, if not THE best fitness content creator in the game. I may be biased, but I think many others would agree. And even though he rarely does podcasts, you can tell in this episode that Aadam spends a lot of time thinking about these complex issues and distilling them in a digestible fashion. So, after you listen to this episode, make sure you check out the rest of his content for more fitness wisdom gems with a sprinkling of F-bombs. Enjoy!
In this episode, we cover:
-How he's been handling COVID in the UK
-The effects of limited social interactions
-A day in the life of Aadam
-His morning routine
-Reading techniques and notetaking
-How we journal differently
-Managing your schedule around your energy
-His struggles after his famous fat loss article took off
-Growing out of expectations of your past self
-When perfectionism becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy
-Lowering expectations to make more progress
-"What would Aadam think of this?"
-Unfocused vs focused comparison of others
-Paying attention to what you DON'T want
-3 levels of friendships
-Why ignorance can be helpful
-Becoming the type of person who's successful
-Why achieving goals doesn't always make you happy
-And much more!
