Barnes, Leslie and Jimmy interview 81-year-old Robert Gary, a retired Marine who stopped an armed robbery at a seafood café in Jacksonville, Florida—with a .22 Magnum pistol he hadn’t fired since probably WWII.
Gary was dining with his wife and sisters when a masked gunman stormed in with a sawed-off shotgun yelling “get down!” While most hit the floor, Robert stayed calm, pulled out his legally permitted pistol, and shot the suspect when he turned his back. Another diner also fired a shot, but Robert thinks his bullet hit the guy—who then ran out, dropped the shotgun, and later ended up in the hospital. The slug stayed in him.
Key points:
-
Robert served in WWII, including Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
-
He calmly fired one shot from his concealed carry while others ducked.
-
Cops found the suspect later, but ballistics couldn’t determine which bullet hit—Robert swears it was his.
-
He still hasn’t gotten his pistol back.
-
Best quote: “I forgot to say, ‘Go ahead, make my day.’”
