NC Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson is the frontrunner in his state’s Republican gubernatorial primary, and oh holy crap is he a conspiracy theorist and a bigot. Robinson isn’t just your run-of-the-mill “9/11 was an inside job” or QAnon-believing conspiracy theorist. He does buy into both of those, along with many others, but he also believes that Beyoncé’s music is “satanic,” Jay-Z is “demonic,” and reality television shows are a precursor to a New World Order in which people are condemned in show trials and executed. That’s a special level of whoa. David Brooks a columnist @ NYT's latest piece“To Be Happy, Marriage Matters More Than Career,” confesses, “As I confront young adults who think this way [not prioritizing marriage], I am seized by an unfortunate urge to sermonize.” Brooks lectures about the importance of marriage with all the sanctimony you’d expect of a man who, a couple years after divorcing his wife of decades, fell rapturously in love with a woman 23 years younger than himself and remarried. Young Thug was indicted in May 2022 along with 27 others under Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statute, known as RICO. Like the 45th's RICO indictment, the charging papers described a corrupt “enterprise” whose members shared common illegal goals. Doctors, of course, are just as human and error-prone as everyone else, but because they presumably know more than average about how to interpret medical information. So why were they sending out stuff that wasn't true? It's not clear how far that misinformation spread, but once false impressions take hold, it can be very hard to change them.  Roughly 1 million Americans hold medical licenses in the United States, so 52 is a tiny fraction of the total. Misinformation that comes from doctors can be particularly damaging, because of the trust associated with medical credentials. Others promoted unsubstantiated claims or conspiracy theories about the government or the origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. This kind of information caused real harm to people who suffered or died unnecessarily as well as to people who lost their faith in science when presented with misinformation about vaccine and drug development Even if another doctor corrects the misinformation, "people will get confused about who to believe and it's the profession that suffers.
