Long before Chucky graced the big screen in Child’s Play in 1988, many people expressed distrust for a seemingly innocent popular childhood item: dolls. According to the Smithsonian Magazine, when dolls became more lifelike in the 19th century, they wandered into what is considered the Uncanny Valley, which is a term used to describe things that have a human-like appearance, but are not human, which evokes a specific negative emotional response in us actual humans, leading us to feel uneasy, creeped out, or even downright disgusted. Going even further, humans have managed to attach specific rituals and folklore to dolls, taking them from innocent childhood play things, to something far more sinister. This week, we’re talking about two of these dolls, Robert the Doll and Annabelle.
