Today we are in Mark 3:13-19. This is where Jesus selects the 12. We talk about the fight between belonging and authenticity and how important friends are. Friends that allow you to be vulnerable and authentic while still seeing you as belonging beside them. That in a post ethnocentric paradigm we ought to be grateful to find one such person and for those who have several, you should count yourself lucky. We also hit on that such circles of trust are not with out problems and even betrayal at times.

Today we are in Mark Chapter 3 vs 7-12 where Jesus strangely puts some distance between him and those who need and want him. We use this as a launching point to describe self care and the need for it. Once we see even Jesus himself needs his space at times we can feel encouraged to make sure we get our own self care.

Today we take a 2 minute 45 second soundbite from Jordan Peterson and give voice to the mystery he speaks of. We also talk about other voices in this space and why, as various religions battle ideologically over who has the truth and whose view is right, the literal rigid dogmatic dive into the scriptures is the least useful way of interacting with these stories. There is something within us that craves the mystery of this universe and the cosmos. There is something within us that that senses that there is truth there and it is not expressed best by those who define it and or those who built theological walls around it. Rather it seems expressed best by those who who know it can not be defined. It can not be spoken or labeled and that the best way to approach it is to walk around the edges of it knowing it is in the end unknowable.

Last episode we talked about Jesus entering the synagogue and attending to the man with the deformed hand. Today we tell the rest of the story which is to shine a light on how Jesus seems to always be painted into the corner by his religious leaders and somehow someway uses their lack of vulnerability to turn the situation on its head. Pay close attention to why Jesus always has the upper hand in these conversations. And notice how Jesus responds to their lack of vulnerability. Lastly can you sense Jesus’ defiance at his handling a situation that could be put off till later if only to annoy and push back against the religious leaders of his tribe. In this story we get a good sense of how those who fight rightly for truth and goodness are treated by their religious systems and their tribes when the do-gooders are pointing to institutional unhealthiness and a lack of vulnerability.

Today we delve into Mark chapter 3: 1-3 where Jesus enters the synagogue and come across a man with a deformed hand. We setup episode 16 story which is the tension between Jesus who wants to heal and the Pharisees who do not want to see their rules challenged. But stay focused here in episode 15 on Jesus as one who wants to help and the man with the deformed hand who is in need of a helper. We even talk briefly about Mr. Rogers and how when each of us go through life experiencing challenges there are always helpers around and that we need to both look for them as well as be the helper others are looking for. We discuss how only when we experience the complexity of humanity are we prepared to have real compassion

Today we get to the end of the 2nd chapter of Mark and dissect versus 23 to 28. Here Jesus disciples are eating the grain heads on the Sabbath as they travel through fields. The Pharisees see them doing such and ask Jesus about his disciples’ behavior. Jesus helps us with his answer see that while in a past stage of development we deeply need community rules and boundaries, in later stages we develop a deep inner morality that allows us to navigate the world without being bound to such rule based systems and the rules within them.

Today we tackle Mark Chapter 2:18-22 where Jesus is asked why his disciples don’t fast as the Pharisees do and even as the disciples of John the baptist do? His response seems slightly disconnected from the question and we explore that but the parable Jesus shares in responses have great meaning on their own to make it a gold mine to explore. New cloth patches on old cloth outfits and new wine in old wine skins. What happens when those stuck in rigidity meet those who are adapting and growing.

Today we talk about attraction, namely who Jesus attracts and why he attracts them. We focus on both sides of the coin which are that Jesus is a safe space for those who are willing to expose their shadow. As well as the people who are ready to expose their shadow see Jesus as a safe space. Today’s episode focuses on “those who know”
